Big Event Here Feb. 21Time Trials Being Held For It 250 Snowmobile laceTraverse Winter Carnival, Inc. reported today that the top qualifying lime through Thursday for the February 21 T.C. 250 snowmobile race near Traverse City was posted by Mel Kitchen of Elmira at an average speed of 60.98 inph on the new thrce-quarter-mile track built for the major race event.Carnival spokesmen said drivers have described the modified oval track near US-31 5. four miles south of Traverse City as “tough and challenging” but an excellent facility.Top snowmobile competitors are battling in time trials this week for some of the 50 places in the race. Don Brown of Traverse City, winner of the 1970 International 500 last weekend at Sautt Ste. Marie, is slated to make his qualify-runs lor the T.C. 250 Saturday morning. Roger Hoyle, who had the best trials time at the Soo, was to make his runs here today.According to a carnival organization listing, the 10 best T.C. 250 qualifying times through Thursday were: 1. Vic Bloom, Central Lake, Mich., Skidoo, 59.10 mph; 5. Roger Griner, Interlochen, Mich., Polaris, 58.62 mph; 6. Earl Soderquist, Honor, Skidoo, 58.48 mph; 7. Gene Denman, Acme, Mich., Sno-jet, 58.13 mph; 8, Everette Peck, Traverse City, Mich., Arctic Cat, 58.10 mph; 9. Tom Hybiski, Wayland, Mich., Rupp. 58.08 mph; 10. Ken VanAsselt, Grant, Mich., Arctic Cat, 57.73 mph.“The organization said timeI trials will be run all day to-j day, Saturday, and Sunday at [the new track.Prize money for the feature race will total $15,000, with a $5,000 award for first place, 152,500 for second, and a 51,000 for third. With lap money totaling 53,560 and a $500 prize for the fastest time trial, the race victor could in theory win some 59,000, officials have pointed out.A number of other attractions are planned for the Traverse Winter Carnival, February 20-22 in and near Traverse City and with related events planned for the preceding week. 'The big winter celebration is designed to focus attention on and provide added fun in the snow season, growing rapidly in popularity among those who like winter sports,One event scheduled was described today by a carnival spokesman. It is a snowball throwing contest, a special event of the carnival. This event will take place at the Civic Center (formerly the fairgrounds) Friday, February 20 at 7 p.m., preceding the Polaris Thrill Team Show. The Traverse City Senior high school student council is helping to conduct the contest.The contest will be conducted with five classes in competition. Class 1 is for elementary grade boys and girls, Class 2 for Junior High boys, (Hass 3 for Junior High girls, Class 4 for Senior High boys, and Class 5 for Senior High girls. Judging will be based on distance and accuracy in throwing at a designated target. The winner in each class will receive a gift certificate.Applications for this special winter carnival event are available at the principal’s office in the various area schools.
