But that does not satisfy the governor who says that he knows that it is to be a prize fight and that he will stop it but refuses to state how he will stop it. But it is learned that he has issued secret orders as stated in a dispatch to The Herald last night to have three regiments of the state militia mobilize in Cincinnati on Friday morning and they will be used to prevent the fight. The managers at first thought to do as the managers of the Corbett-.Maher fight did in Jacksonville, Florida, when the militia was called out to stop the fight, that was to charge the boys in blue admission as anybody else was charged but now it has been decided to recognize them all as officers of the law that they may assist the local police in preserving order and preventing brutality. It is known that Colonel Meade of the Third regiment at Dayton is not opposed to glove contests and that he has intended all, the time to attend the contest and a message from Cincinnati states that he will attend the fight with his regiment. That Governor Nash is determined to stop the fight is a positives fact as he has induced the supreme court to adjourn until the nineteenth which is four days after the contest is billed to come off. Judge Hollister before whom the injunction suit’was tried has taken the matter under advisement until Thursday at noon and the managers of the contest had intended, in case the judge decided against them to appeal to the supreme court but the foxy governor was too smooth for them and now the whole matter lies with Judge Hollister. By deciding in favor of the contest ho would make thousands of friends and would undoubtedly he the hero of Cincinnati. The business men of the Queen City recognize that the contest1 means a great deal to them for it will bring thousands of men from all over the country to attend who will buy their spring goods while in the city.As stated in a dispatch to The Herald last night the citizens of Cincinnati feel that it will be an insult to them if the militia is called out and they are very indignant over the matter and they may well be. A scientific glove contest will not hurt anylwdy and as Mayor Fleischmann of Cincinnati says, men from all over the country will go and pay a big price for a seat to witness the contest.Jeffries and Ruhlin are very indignant that Governor Nash calls them [prize fighters. Neither one has ever participated in a prize fight and in speaking of the governor's action Jeffries said. “I don't blame the governor for the stand he has taken against prize fights. He certainly is justified in upholding the law against violators. The only exception that I have to his lis statement is that I am a prize fighter and am about to engage in a brutal affair. Now 1 never took part in a prize0- -1Sht in my life.and never intend to.Ab my matches have been limited round contests, in which I have demonstrated that my skill was superior to my opponent's.If you wish to make Ruhlin angryrefer to him as a prize fighter. saidtie Billy Madden, his manager Gus hasr-1 never taken part in a prize fight inpo | aml I don't believe that anocean of money would get him to-do I so. He is one of the best law-abiding citizens I ever met. and has as er much respect for laws as any man liv-,y ing. He was strictly a youngster when I became his manager, back in 1896. and since then 1 have always made his ‘8 matches for him. As well as I know n- him. and as much confidence as he has in my ability as a manager, .1 I would not have the moral 'courage to ivlask him to sign articles for a prize fight.”If ever n boxer was confident of victory he is Gus Ruhlin. the Akron Giant. While he fully appreciates the caliber*e i t*ie man *s S(,heduled to box he looks upon a win over Jeffries as a sure R* thing. He says tliat he does not want re people to think that he Is bragging but that he thinks that he has Jeffries siz-I led tip so well that he knows his every move, feint and blow. They fought a twenty round go in San Francisco sev-1- era! years ago and the contest was decided a draw and according to the1, well known adage a fighter improves s itli every contest and is always learn-' ing something new. Since they met in ( Frisco Jeffries has fought ten bnttles I while Ruhlin has fought twenty-four e and lie figures it that he has improved more than twice as much as the chani-I pion. Ruhlin expects the contest to last the full twenty rounds find thinks that he will be given the decision on points as it is a well known fact that he is now one of the most scientific men in the business. At any rate the match will be the greatest that hai been fought in years as it will be beaid.n-LStedtween the two heaviest men who ever faced each other. . .Jeffries and Ruhlin are great friends and tlie other night attended a theater together and attracted a great deal of attention. They jollied each other a great deal and when they went to part to go to their.respective training quarters they shook hands and some one yelled ‘'time” and they both squared off as though they were just entering the ring. After the fight in Cincinnati Jeffries will again go on the road with his A Man from the West company and his brother Jack will hereafter act as his sparring partner.
