Adans. 49-44Cougar Drive HaltedBy Buff Free ThrowsBy ERNEST THOMPSONThe Ada Cougars outshot, outfought, outrebounded and outdefensed the state’s third-ranked McAlester Buffaloes Tuesday night, but dropped a 49-44 decision after leadingmost of the way.In a Sooner’ Star Conference tilt on the Buff home court, Coach Paul Landrith’s boys turned in their finest performance of the season only to see it go for naught as a rash of McAlester free tosses turned the tide against them.The McAlester '‘victory'’ kept the smooth Buffaloes in first place in the Sooner Star with a 9-1 mark gnd a 15-2 record for the year.Ada dropped to a 7-8 season recorc with 4-4 in the loop.Ada Lead* EarlyThe Cougars surged ahead in the first few minutes of play as scoring was scarce in the initial quarter. Forward Wayne Lee drew first blood on an 18-foot set shot and seconds later, added a free throw to put the Adans ahead 3-d.McAlestor's Tom Roberts hit the first of a long string of Tree throws for his club to make it 3-1 and Ada's David Lee promptly put the Cougars in front by a 5-1 count on a base line jump shot.With both clubs playing excellent defensive ball, the score mounted slowly. Bob Carroll drove the right side of the Buff defense for a 7-3 Ada margin. Moments later. John Hammer hit for McAlester to put the Buffs - ahead briefly by a 9-7 count.Cougars Ahead At QuarterJust as the buzzer sounded. 6-5went through the McAlester left side. He was lifted bodily and thrown to the floor in an attempt at the go-ahead bucket. McAlester was awarded the ball out-of-bounds and promptly capitalized with camper Jack Lee hitting again to make it 47-44. The Buffs went into a stall and Roberts broke loosewith 28 seconds to go lor the finalbucket of the contest.center Jack Lee of McAlester fouled Wayne Lee of Ada who bucketed two free ones after the quarter ended and Ada led at the end of the first period. 10-9.The second quarter was mucn the same. Ada continued to pour through the field goals, but McAlester free throws allowed the host club to amass a slim 23-22 : advantage at haiftimo. Bruce Long.-! James Ballard and Johnny Muniz : hit consecutive field goals for the Cougars and David _ Lee racked up a long set shot in the waning moments of the half.Ada led 9-4 in field goals at intermission. ,Coming back for the third period, the Cougars went ahead once again, Carroll riopod the cords on a iong jump shot to tie the score at 24-24 and Radford Van Zant put Ada ahead. 28-25. on a set shot with 6 minutes to go in the third.Buffs Still TrailCarroll increased it to 29-25 and the Adans maintained a 4-point lead most of the period. The game became rougher and rougher with fouls being called on the Ada club consistently while McAlester drew few Densities.With the Cougars ahead. 35-32, Van Zant drove the middle, v/as hit three times by McAlester players and shoved out of bounds, Charging was called and Hamner hit -i free throw to close the margin to 35-33, Ada.David Lee came through with a jumper just as the buzzer sounded to give the Ada team a 37-33 lead at quarter.Out Front By 5Brucc Long increased it to 3S-33 on a rare try from the charity line.The turning point of the tilt came with 6:50 to go in the game- Ada led by 5 points when McAlester's Jim Martin look a pass and backed■The talented Buffaloes were allowed only 14 field goals by the Cougars who hit 17 of 41 attempts from the field. However. David Lee led Ada with 15 counters to his credit.In a preliminary “B” tilt. Ada avenged an earlier loss to a towering McAlester team by grabbing a 44-38 triumph. McAlester. sparked by three boys above the 6-6 mark,led most of the way, but the 14B*'Cougars came back in a late drive to annex the win.Jay Carter led the Ada Bees with 14 points and teammate Lament English had 12.
