MESHSpecial to the TelegramGREAT BEND — Great bend’s 6-5 senior center Tbny Waldron was selected as Homecsming King during a halftime ceremony.King Tbny and the Great Bend Panthers then did their part in crowning Garden City, 74-55, last night in a Western Athletic Conference game. Waldron scored 21 points and grabbed 20 rebounds while 6-2 senior guard Chris Marsh scored 21 — including five three-pointers.Garden City led only once at 1-0, and the Panthers went on a 164) run to take a 17-4 lead after the first period The Panthers over came a 1-for-U start from the floor.Buffs coach Jeff Chronister said the Buffaloes were in the game for about half of the opening frame.“I thought we played good defense for the first four minutes, Chronister said. “Then they shot us out of it. We got back on our heels and they didn’t make any mistakes When vou trail by dou-w / : wble digit points you have to get second chance baskets and thevwweren’t letting us have any.”The Buffaloes dropped to 6-11 overall and 2-3 in the WAC. Great Bend snapped a three-game losing streak and improved to 10-6 overall and 3-2 in the leagueRyan Reynolds, 6-5 senior, added 10 points for the Panthers Jake Sills led Garden City with 14 points — including three treys. Nathan Strandmark added nine points Great Bend coach Jeff Langrehr said the Panthers worked hard this week in practice to improve defensive rebounding “We’ve been harping on how poor our rebounding and defense have been (during the losing streak),” Langrehr said. “At Garden City we were beat in a one-on-one situation.“Tonight we played so much better and it’s the same type of defense we’ve been playing all year,” he said. “We just made sure we took care of our one-on-one responsibilities. Our defensive rebounding was so much better We did a much better job of passing and catching the ball.” Chronister said Waldron may have outrebounded the entire Garden City team.“What did he have — 20 rebounds'*, Chronister said. “I don’t think we had that many. We didn’t block out very well They're very active and Waldron is a great player. He’s active in the post. He creates opportunities for himself and his teammates. Every coach ought to have one like him.The Buffs are back in action Tbesday when they host Dodge City.
