Tigers WindUp SeasonBY MIKE BRITON Eagle Sports WriterCOLLEGE STATION - The AM Consolidated Tigers will try to finish the year strong as they host Navasota in a season finale for both teams here tonight at Tiger gym with a7:30 tipoff.Yes, it’s that time of year. W hen everything is all over for a team or just beginning. For those going into postseason play it’s really on the upswing, but for others it’s the last game of the year. There's incentive to win for teams in both these categories. A team which is going to contend for a district, regional or state title certainly lias incentive. But the last game of the year is special too.IT’S LIKE the old Knute Hockney story, “Let s win this one for the Gipper. That’s how teams like Consol feel at tins point in the season, exceptthey are probably saying, “Let’s win this one for the seniors.”Four of the five Consol starters are playing their last basketball game in a Tiger uniform. They are Philip Steen, larry Williams, Pat Cartwright and Scott Shafer, ‘i'm losing some real quality kids there,” Consol coach Jim Foreman said of the foursome. The Tigers are 12-17 on the season and 3-6 in zone play, and the difference in them not being in the 11-AAA playoff is minute. They have played as well as anybody in the north zone, maybe with the exception of league leading Tomball.NAVASOTA, ON the other hand, has as much talent as anybody in the zone and is considerably quicker, but has tumbled to a 4-5 north zone slate. The Rattlers were upset by the Tigers in the round ofthe season in a thriller, beat byTomball twice and then knocked off by the zone’ssecond place team Huntsville. It's been a frustrating season for both Consol and Navasota. The battle here tonight should be quite interesting for that reason if no other. Both teams had a good chance of making the playoffs but faltered for different reasons.Foreman is not worried about the Tigers getting apathetic. “WTien you get down to the last few games or workouts, the kids dread it and the coaches too, especially when you’re out of contention,' Foreman said describing the present situation. “But they've (Tiger players) responded well. I think this group of kids just enjoy basketball.THIS MATCHUP could be as exciting as the one earlier this season, as the Tigers deliberate game will be constantly challenged by the lightning fast break of the Rattlers. Navasota guard Nicky Nelms is quick enough to dribble around a man regardless of his defensive position and still get the layup.“They’re going to run and gun, Foreman commented. “When you get a cheap basket on them, they’re notorious for taking the ball out of the net and passing it the length of the court,” he added. “That is a trademark of Navasota.”What are the Tigers going to do to stop the break? In the earlier meeting Consol controlled the boards and cut off the outlet pass. Whether or not they do the same thing remains to be seen, but that tactic had tremendous effect in the exciting Tiger victory at Rattler gym.STARTING ALONG with seniors Steen, Shafer, Williams and Cartwnght, will be junior Ronnie Morgan, who has really come on the last three ball games. There is no tomorrow for either team in tonight’s contest. This is it. This is the finale.
