Randy Stegmeier said the case is covered by state domestic-violence statutes because McClain and the woman, also a UW athlete, have lived together.The incident occurred shortly after a bus carrying the men’s basketball team arrived on campus after a 91-65 loss to Arizona, Stegmeier said. The alleged victim, who asked police not to release her name, met McClain at the bus with a couple of her friends, Stegmeier said.McClain and the woman got into a disagreement and McClain pushed, shoved or struck her “in some manner and caused her to be knocked to the ground,” Stegmeier said.When she tried to get up, “he apparently pushed her back down and then took a belt or a strap of some kind ... and struck her a couple of times with that,” the officer said.The woman’s friends then stepped in and got McClain to stop, Stegmeier said.A campus police officer who happened to be driving by saw what was happening and arrested McClain, Stegmeier said.It was the second suspension this season for McClain, who was benched for two exhibition games and the season opener after he and a teammate tried to get a local store to allow exchange of basketball shoes provided free to team members.McClain, a junior from Springfield, Mo., started 16 of 17 games this season, leading the team with 75 assists. He averaged 4.1 points and 2.1 rebounds per game.Washington is in last place in the Pac-10 with a 1-8 record this season and is 5-12 overall. The Huskies have 10 games left, including a Thursday night game with No. 6 UCLA here.
