Wednesday, February 9, 1994The ShafterThe Lady Colonels splitpairBy Nick BarnardAll of '.he Lady Colonels who suited up for Friday’s contest got playing time in a 24-12 win over the Wasco Lady Cubs, but weren’t as fortunate against the Centennial Golden Hawks, losing 35-13.Karina Ochoa scored three free throws in the first quarter to give Shafter a 3-0 first period edge.Becky Chewning opened the second with a steal. She passed the ball to Corrina Alvidrez who assisted Chewning for a basket.In the next few minutes, the Tigers out scored Shafter 7-2 to get back inthe game and tie it at 7-7.Amber Anderson collected an offensive rebound and put it in for 2.Kristen Farmer then scored two free throws to put Shafter ahead 11 -7 by the end of the first half.Alvidrez scored the first points of the third quarter when Anderson set her up for a 3-pointer.Ochoa scored three more free throws and Shannon Balangeescored 1.Alvidre/ assisted Beth Zachary fora basket and Shafter led 20-10 bv the0end of the third.Decdra Cobb, Quinta Lyons, Cristina Cantu and Petra Castellon, among others, put the game away inthe fourth period.Ochoa led the Colonels with 6 points and five rebounds. Lyons added five rebounds. Zachary led with four steals and Alvidrez led with two assists.Shafter at Golden Hawks On the previous Tuesday, Shafter took a beating from Centennial, but it didn’t start that way.Lisa Ortiz, who missed the Wasco game due to an injury, and Anderson, gave the Colonels an early 3-0 lead in the first two minutes of the game The Golden Hawks ended the quarter with a 5-0 run.Alvidrez scored Shafters only basket in the second and tliev trailed theHawks 12-5 by the end of the first half.The Hawks won the third period 9-2 and the fourth 14-6 for the victor)Anderson led w ith 3 points and six rebounds.
