Track team ready with new coachBY RON KRONFORSTThe UW-Oshkosh men’s track team has a bright outlook for the coming season under new head coach Ron Akin.“We have an excellent nucleus of people,” said Akin. “By the time the conference meet rolls 'around, if we overcome injuries, and knowing the meet is here, we should be very good.”The Titans are led by two returning All-Americans, Max Harn, who finished third in the 1500-meter run at the 1983 NCAA national outdoor meet, and Kevin Rogers, a racewalker, who competed in the NAIA national meet last season.“We were .hit hard by graduation,” said Akin. “We also lost some people due to eligibility problems and injuries.”The Titans will only have 14 returning let-termen for the beginning of the indoor season.“There are some outstanding kids amongthose 14,” said Akin.He emphasized, however, that the returning lettermen could not be relied on to carry the team.“My primary concern is not to have them compete in too many events,” he said. “I hope for some surprises among the unknown kids. If that occurs, we*il be near the top of the conference.“We’ll be hurt by the fact that the university took away our national competition by dropping our affiliation with the NAIA,” said Akin.Akin looks forward to the opportunity of having the team return to the national meet again next season.“My hope is that next year we’ll have the opportunity to compete in the indoor national meet once again,” said Akin.The Titans will open th*^doa**eason Saturday, Feb, 10 at 4 p.m., when they host UW-Whitewater at Kolf Sports Center.
