Pope County tops Ridgway in Class M state title gameIt was just what a championshipgame should be.A large crowd watched two outstanding teams go head to head Thursday night at Woodlawn High School in the Class M state title game. When it was all over, an outstanding Pope County team had rallied for a 36-32 win over Ridgway.It was a rematch of the Regional finals of a week ago but this time around, Pope County found it much tougher as compared to their earlier 19-point win.The Pirates missed their first nine shots of the game as both teams were playing exceptionally good defense and both teams were also perhaps a little tight offensively.By the end of the first period, the Pirates led 7-2 and at halftime, it was a 19-12 Pope County lead.Ridgway came back in the third period and pulled within three at 27-24. Then with 2:30 left in the game, Ridgway took the lead at 32-31.Pope County regained the upper hand at the two-minute mark as Bailey Floyd scored from 10 feet for a 33-32 Pirate edge. Then with 1:27 left on the game clock, Jim Wallacecame up with a steal and drove the length of the floor for a 35-32 lead.The Pirates came back down and clinched the game by stealing the ball again, then with 12 seconds remaining, Wallace hit one of two from the line to end the scoring.Darrick King led the 20-4 Ridgway club with 13 points while Glenn Williams added 11.For the 22-2 Pirates, Jim Wallace led the way with 16 points and was the only player in double figures. Bailey Floyd had 11 rebounds and Bill Haner pulled off nine for the Pirates.“We played a diamond-and-one on Timmy Monroe and held him down to two points and that was a big key in the game,” Pope County coach Bruce Bard said.“Steve Crim matched up with Monroe man-to-man with help from Danny Vaughn and really did a great job. He also had six assists in the game and never made a turnover.“It was a really good championship game. Ridgway was scrappy and we couldn’t put themaway.“I thought our kids held theircomposure but we’ve done it all year. We’ve had seven games where we’ve come down to the final minute and pulled it out,” added Bard, a former standout at Shawneetown High School and SIC.Ridgway coach Mike Vargo was also pleased with the performance of his team.“It was our best defensive effort of the season,” Vargo said.“We stopped them inside well enough and we slowed it down and controlled the tempo. Wecould never have gotten into a running ame with them, they can dribble it down the floor faster than we can run.“We really hit the boards well, Darrick King and Glenn Williams did super job on the boards for us,” Vargo added.Ridgway 2 10 12 8-32Pope County 7 12 8 9-36Ridgway (32)-King 13, Williams 11, Browning 6, Monroe 2 andDownen.Pope County (36)-Wallace 16, Vaughn 6, Haner 6, Crim 4 and Floyd4.
