Thus it is no surprise that in almost any opening, white gains a superior pawn presence in that sector.T he hypermodern openings (i.e., Alekhine’s defense, the king’s Indian, the Gruenfeld, etc., which are notable for the ex travagant pawn buildups on one side, are only exaggerations of what otherwide happens in the more “normal” opening patterns, (i.e. the French Defense, Sicilian, Ruy Lopez, etc.).The last, the “Ruy” is of special interest, because, in that most summeterical of standard openings, white’s “raison d’etre” is to construct a time honored pawn advantage.Diagram One shows us one of the most frequently occurring positions in chess.BLACKBO NO 90 O X 9X NX BXQR QN QB QKB KN KRWHITEWhite will play 9 P Q4 !This position is the culmination of the firststage of white’s strategy. He has just played 8. P-B3! and “nothing” (but exceptionalmoves) can stop the characteristic 9. or 10. P 04.White will then have gained the familiar “pawn-a t - B 3 - Q 4 - a n d - K 4 ’ ’ formation True, black with 8. . P-Q3 will gain his own central phalanz. But it will be a lesser one. And it will be around white’s positional pawn superiority that the latter will maneuver aggressively, submit black to the enduring “Spanish (Ruy Lopez) torture,” andrack up the plus score which is the hallmark of that opening.The t act ica 1 -strategicpoint of all this is that afterwhite’s innocent 8. P-B3, the central takeover cannot be “reasonably” stopped. Black’s own queen’s knight blocks his own queen bishop pawn, and his own central pawn play for the moment will be defensive.It may surprise some of our readers that the “slender” P-B3 (though P-KB3) played an unecpected and decisive role in a dramatic moment of Bobby Fischer’s ascendancy to the world championship.With the score inhis challenger’s match with Petrosian (the winner would play Spassky), Fischer seized the center with a surprising “. .
