Burrell had a close call, edging Hampton, 55-54 while Knoch downed Kitt-tanning 61-48.The Ford City - Springdale game was exciting because it was well-played and also because the score was tied 10 times and the lead changed 11 times before the Sabers shut off the Dynamos’ fuel source.Ford City coach Mark Fruehan used all 14 of his players. “We had to fight backto win, and my boys had the confidence to make a comeback.”Springdale scored the first two field goals on shots by Jim Basilone and Dan White to take a 4-0 lead The Sabers came back on field goals by Jim Minarcin, Andy Charney and Mark Dinga to take a 6-4 lead. The score seasawed and at the end of the first period Ford City led 11-10. The second period was also a seasaw contest and at halftime the score was deadlocked at 25-all.Springdale outscored Ford City 17-12 in the third period to lead 42-37 going into the last quarter.A field goal each by Bernie Miloser and Dave Lerner in the first minute of the final quarter cut the lead to 42-41. Jim Minarcin scored two foul goals and Ford City went ahead 43-42 as the lead changed for the 11th and final time.Jim Minarcin scored a field goal to increase the lead to 45-42. Ken Lessig scored for Springdale and the score narrowed to 45-44. A pair of foul goals by Jim Mikula, a field goal each by Andy Charney and Jim Minarcin gave Ford City a51-44 lead with 2:04 remaining.Dan White scored two foul goals for Springdale, to cut the lead to five points. Charney scored a field goal for Ford City and Jim Basilone for Springdale to make the score 53-48 with 1:19 remaining.Two foul goals by Dave Lerner and a field goal by Jim Minarcin put the score to 57-48 with 39 seconds remaining. Dan White scored two foul goalswith 32 seconds remaining to make the score 57-50. Charney made one out of two fouls with 21 seconds remaining to make it 58-50. Dan White scored two foul goals with six seconds on the clock to make the final, 58-52.Fran Moxie, in his second year as head coach of the Dynamos, used several variations of the zone throughout most of the game and used some man-to-man defense in the closing minutes. Ford City went man-to-man almost entirely with perhaps a slight use of zone tactics.“I thought my boys played a good ball game,” said Fran Moxie. “We have a number of underclassmen and towards the end only had one senior in the game.”Springdale lost junior Stuart Hall after he had collected five personal fouls with 3:08remaining in the game.Springdale trailed by only onepoint, the score being 45-44 atthe time. Moxie used nineplayers. Three differentSpringdale players wereslightly shaken up during thegame and were taken out of action momentarily.“We have trouble getting the boys to carry out their assignments,” Mark Fruehan sai(L “and as a result they would sit on the bench for awhile. At times when the players would hear me and I would call out a pattern they would score. But they are supposed to do this on their own. I thought Mikula came through to put us back in the game with his outstanding defensive work.”Ford City continued to be plagued by being out scored at the foul line, but fortunately they had a big lead in the field goal department to win. Springdale shot an uncanny 18 out of 21 at the foul line for 86 percent. The scorebook showed that Ford City made eight out of16 for 50 per cent. The Sabers had 25 field goals out of 51 for 49 per cent while Springdale made17 out of 47 for 37 per cent.The Sabers had 32 reboundsto Springdale's 26. Leading rebounders for Ford City were Jim Mikula 9, Mark Dinga, Dave Lerner, seven each. Rob Thomas with 10 and Stuart Hall with eight, led Springdale.Jim Basilone with 20 and Dan White with 18, both of Springdale were top scorers in the game. Dave Lerner had 16 and Jim Minarcin 14 for FordCity.An interested spectator at last night’s game was LarryMcGuire, retired head coach of the former Arnold High School basketball team. McGuire taught at Arnold for 39 years and was head coach 29 years.He retired in 1964.
