Strangest Hoop Game Played In ArizonaBOWIE (AP) - They call It the strangest basketball game ever played in Arizona.The setting: The small gym of Bowie High School in southeastern Arizona. The time: La.lt; Saturday night.The Bowie Panthers were meeting their closest rivals, the Long-horns of San Simon.San Simon Coach T. C. Springer — an English teacher who doesn't know mudi about basketball — was worried. His team had already lost eight straight games and his squad consisted of six players, almost half the boys in Uie scliool.Rowie led 35-1S at hal/time, j Then the trouble began. Will Nitt mid John Lacey of San Simon fouled out, leaving only four Son Simon players.Coach Keirii Creamer of Bowie pulled one of his men, leaving four on each team on 1he court.San Simon's Sam Gobbart fouled out, also in the third period. Creamer pulled another.Then the teams went out for the center jump to start the fourth quarter, Bnwio led 63-26 and each team had only three men. Officials Eddie Cocking and Phil Anderson didn’t want the game to end with more refemes than players. so Cocking left the floor. ^Then John Graham and Bill No-Inn, both of San Simon, fouled out. That left the entire San Simon team made up of Bob Talbott, sou of the principal.Bowie pulled .ill but Wayne Klump and for two minules il was the 6-foot. 6-inch Klump against • 5-loot-S Talbott. Talbott gave it everything he had for his alma I mater, and Vas outscored only j 4-2.With 5 minutes left in the game and Bowie loading 73-2S. Springer decided the issur was no longer in doubt and called it quits.Talbott was something of a hero. While all his tcammales } fouled out. he finished without A i single foul.I Springer admits his team has been having trouble. It lost all its panics last year and now has a two-season record ol 0-23.
