Titan women face road tests, Oshkosh faces Eau Claire and River Falls back to backBY STEVE LYLESAdvance-Titan Reporter_Maybe it just wasn’t meant to be.The University of Wisconsin Oshkosh women’s basketball team played a hard-fought overtime contest against thePointersof UW Stevens Point last Friday at Albee Hall.After two halves and four minutes and 58 scconds of overtime, through 12 lead changes and the loss of Lisa Kirchenwitz to fouls, the Titans played to a tie with the Pointers. Unfortunately for the Titans, the ball was not in their hands the final seconds of the overtime.A 10-foot base-line jumper by reserve forward Lisa Grudzinski with two seconds left in the extra period handed the Titans a 77-75 setback. The game which pitted the top two teams in the Wisconsin Women’s Intercollegiate Athletic Conference(WWIAC), featured runs by both team s in an attempt to put the game away. However, Oshkosh’s inside game and a three-point shooting display by Point’s Kate Peterson doused any hopes of a clear victor.Forward Lisa Kirchenwitt and center Maurya McClintock combined for 45 points, with 28 coming from Kirchenwitz, who fouled out late in the second half, to lead the Titans. UW Stevens Points’ Kate Peterson drilled six three-pointers, including five in the second half to lead the Pointers with 21 points. McClintock’s 17 points moved her into fourth on the Oshkosh all-time scoring list with 1,135 points.Freshman Jessie Hoinacki and j uniorLori Backhaus provided the Titans with some key minutes off the bench. Each pulled down six rebounds in the game.“It was a great game, one of thebest I've ever been involved withtas a coach/' coach Kathi Bennett said. “I told our team we got beat, and if we’d play 1 ike that the rest of the season, there aren’t many teams that are going to beat us.”Both UW Oshkosh and UW Stevens Point are now tied on top of the confcrencc with 8-2 records. The loss also ended the Titans seven-game win streak including 14 straight at Albee Hall. Oshkosh now stands at 14-4 overall on the season.This weekend the Titans will make one of their biggest road trips of the season, taking on UW Eau Claire on Friday night before moving on to UW River Falls on Saturday. Both teams are in the upper half of the conference stand-ings and despite Oshkosh victories over both earlier in the season, could cause problems for the Titans.Players to watch arc Lisa Kirchenwitz, who leads the WWIAC in scoring at a 19.3 pace, Stacie Robey of UW River Falls who is third in the conference with a 17.3 scoring average and DianeRing and Dawn Rattray of UW Eau Claire with 12.9 and 12.8 points a game respectively.“Eau Claire has a great 1-3-1 zone trap and River Falls gets up and down the court and shoots three's,” Bennett said. “For us to beat Eau Claire, we're going to have to play more aggressively than last time. River Falls is not thatdisciplined,and hopefully our defense will dictate their offense.‘This weekend is huge for us.
