Pure durability of computer programs gives them unfair advantage in tourneysBEGINNER'S CORNERa b C def8hWHITE'S BEST MOVE?Hint: Go for mate, not Qxb2.□ □ □Chess computers are difficult opponents, as will attest the world’sstrongest human player, Garry Kasparov, whose only match loss inan otherwise impeccable career was his defeat by IBM’s Deep Blue inMay 1997.Computers possess virtually fiaw-less and intimidating powers of calculation, are relentless in attack anddefense, and are physically indefatigable. They also obviously are not plagued by the psychological vulnerability that led to Kasparov’s downfall against Deep Blue.Because they do not blunder under pressure and often find defensive resources difficult for humans to detect and understand, they are able to offer an obdurate andprolonged resistance in even severely compromised positions.During the computer tournament in Cadaques, Spain, from Jan. 3 toThursday, each of the seven elite computers entrant will play a totalof 120 games of about 80 minutes apiece - a mind-boggling numberfrom a human perspective. Eachgame will take an average of 60 or 70 moves. In contrast, during thetirst four rounds of the recent superstar human tournament in Wijk an Zee, the Netherlands, games typically lasted about 35 moves.Because of the difficulties they present and the special mindset thatis needed to play them successfully,it is not surprising that humans are reluctant to havecomputers included in their tournaments.Kasparov recently announced he would not play in an upcoming tournament in Frankfort if the computer Fritz 6 is among the players.“I feel that computers playing in these conditions would be very unfair for humans,” he said.
