(Staff Photo)ntestThey’ll be packing the rafters in the St. Philip high school gym Friday night when the red hot Gael juniors, winners in their last five starts in the South section of the Catholic league, play host to unbeaten Leo in the most crucial game in the junior circuit. The all-important junior tussle, which starts at 7:15o'clock, will be followed by the senior scrape.The Gael juniors are especially anxious to dump the South aiders since it was Leo that handed them their only loss to date, that coming in the league opener on Jan. 4 by a 57 to 45 score.In making it five in a row last Friday night, the Gaels ran up 81 points against St. Ignatius for their highest point total of the! season. The final score was 81 j to 43. The Gaels, paced by Chuck Hirth and John O’Connor, took a 31 to 10 first quarter lead and kept pulling away after that. Hirth tallied 21 points on eight baskets and five free! throws while O’Connor netted 18 on nine baskets. Top scoring nonors, however, went to Jack Kilgailen of St. Ignatius who made 23 points on nine baskets and four free throws.The Gael seniors dropped their fourth game in six sectional starts when they dropped an overtime struggle,55 to 48. The Gaels had a 10-point lead at one point early in the fourth quarter and still had a two-point margin with but two minutes to go. They were unable to hold it, however. The score was deadlocked at 47 apiece at the end of four quarters. However, St. Ignatius tallied eight points on one for the Gaels in the three • minute overtime period.One of the factors in St. Philip's senior defeat was the fact that their scoring ace, Dan Callahan. was well guarded and unable to contribute more than six points to his team's total.
