Bliss wins Silver Crown eventPHOENIX (AP) — Mike Bliss took the lead with 35 laps remaining and went on to victory Sunday in the United States Auto Club Silver Crown portion of the $300,000 Skoal Bandit Racing Copper World Classic.Bliss' victory was his second straight in the Silver Crown ranks at the Copper World Classic for the nation's short-track stars at Phoenix International Raceway’s one-mile oval.In other divisions. Rick Carelli of Arvada. Colo., captured the NASCAR Feather-lite Southwest Tour test, Billy Boat of Glendale, Ariz., took the USAC midget feature and Randy Bauer of Kingston, Wash., got the super modified triumph.Bliss' win came by just 0.65 of a second over Randy Tolsma of Indianapolis, who closed at the end.It was the fourth CopperWorld win for Bliss, of Mil-waukie, Ore.. who took a sprint triumph in 1986 and other Silver Crown mains in 1993 and 1995. The victory was worth $17,597.He used a move on a late restart to seal the win.I was playing some head games before the last restart with the guys.” Bliss said. I was scrubbing my tires on the back straight to keepthem warm and at one point, rather than turn the car back again to scrub the tires,I just took off.”Carelli outlasted the rest of Southwest Tour in an accident-filled 50-lapper to nip Chris Raudman of Redding, Calif., at the line.Carelli’s win was his third in Copper World competition and fourth at PIR. He previously won stock-car classes in 1982 and 1988 and captured a Southwest Tour race in the fall of 1994.Boat dueled Kenny Irwin Jr., of Indianapolis to the midget win, going high around two lapped cars off the final corner to claim his first Copper World victory.Bauer also got his first Copper World title, besting Rebel Jackson Jr. of Burien, Wash., in the super modified main.Accidents sent two drivers to area hospitals.Art Bigiogni of Soledad, Calif., was admitted to St. Joseph’s Hospital in stable condition after a super modified mishap. Bigiogni suffered broken ribs, a bruised lung and a broken left shoulder blade.Ron Eaton of Tacoma, Wash., was transported to Maryvale Samaritan Hospital for treatment of a cut chin and complaining of chest pains after a crash in the Southwest Tour race.
