Record setTracksters hurdle S.CBy Michael Forchette Plainsman SportswriterAuburn’s Track Team defeated South Carolina 70-52 last Monday at an Auburn hosted meet in*the Memorial Coliseum. A sparse crowd saw Auburn’s Terry Baker set a new Coliseum record in the two-mile run with a 9:07.8 time.“South Carolina has one of the strongest programs' in the south,” said Head Track Coach Mel Rosen. “South Carolina beat Auburn two years ago in the first meet that Auburn held in the Coliseum. They also beat us last year.” he said.“This years South Carolina team was supposedly strongest in the jumps, but we strictly outclassed them this time in those events,” said Rosen. It turned out that S.C. did best against Auburn in the middle distance running events. And, this was where Coach Rosen said that he had anticipated Auburn’s weakness to be.Scoring for the meet was done on a three point basis, meaning the winner in each event received three points, the second place finisher received two points, and the third place winner received one point.Auburn swept the 60 yd. dash and the high hurdles, picking up 18 points in these events alone. Freshman Harvey Glance placed first with a 6.2 time and freshman Tony Easley again took a close second. Glance made a 23* 21/2*’ jump and Easley jumped 22*running events was the mile run. Auburn runner Mark Jordan overtook South Carolina runner Bob Day in the final turn of the fun lap to land a 4:18.8 time. Day, who had been leading the race from the start, finished with a close 4:19.0 time.In the 440 yard-dash Willie Smith won with a 51.8 clocking , and Raymond Crump finished second with 54.6. Smith and Crump were running close together throughout the race, but in the final stretch of that contest South Carolina runner tried to shove himself past Crump and as a result both crashed to the floor. Crump got up and finished the race, but the Carolina runner was disqualified.Other Auburn winners were; Marc Valentine, highjump 6’8”: John Cecil, pole vault, 14’6”: and Tony Easley, triple jump, 48’2%”.“The importance of this dual meet was for experience and the home crowd,” said Rosen. “I’m pleased with our performance. We are making good progress and hope to continue.”Rosen said he was most pleased with the performacq of the individuals that represented Auburn in the nationally reknowned Millrose Games at Madison Square Garden in New York City.Auburn sent seven people, including Harvey Glance, and he finished second in the 60 behind Houston McTear of Baker, Fla. He finished a-head of Hasley Crawford, last year’s NCAA champ and Jesse Outlin.9”.In the 60 yd. high hurdles Auburn’s James Walker won with a 7.3 time, Mike Anderson placed second with 7.8 finish and Wayne Wolf followed with an 8.0 time.One of the closest contested
