More AboutF erraris(Continued from Page 26)jThe big yellow No. I Ford covered 593 laps despite frequent pit slops for repairs.Eight laps in front of the Mc-Laren-Bianchi car was a GT 40 driven by Dr. Richard Thompson of Washington, an eight-time national champion, and Jackie Ickx, 22-year-old Belgian.IhaouinfaskeSicmIojclionfrlt; The UNDER -2-liter prizes went to Hermann and Sieffet. Spoerry and Steinemann won the Touring Trophy and Thompson and Ickx were the Grand Touring victors. The Nisonger-KLG InternationalTrophy for women drivers was won by Anita Taylor Matthews of London and Sierra (Smokey) Drolet of Miami, Fla., in a Mustang. !iJanet Guthrie of Great Neck:j N.Y., was the relief driver for j^‘ the winners.sdnT(LIsiartiiofireistA second women’s car, an Asa-Ferrari piloted by Suzy Dietrich of Sandusky, Ohio, and Donna Mae Mims of Bethel Park, Pa., also finished the 24-hour grind. The winning women’s car covered 484 laps and placed 21st among the 30 finishers. Mrs. Mims and Mrs. Dietrich placed 24th. jjyIt was the second ContinentaljP women’s victory in a row for ip: Miss Drolet, and the second!si straight finish for all the others!si except Mrs. Matthews. This was; her first venture in the long; contest.Neither of the two Chevrolet Chaparrals entered by Jim Hall and Hap Sharp of Midland Tex., finished the race. Phil Hill of Santa Monica, Calif., the 1961 world champion, and Mike Spence of England drove like demons for almost four hours.Hill had started in second place by virtue of a fine qualifying run made by Jim Hall.At the fall of the green starting flag Hill jetted the car into the lead. Spence, in his first driving stint, repelled repeated challenges by the Fords and Ferraris but when Hill got back into the car he brushed the wall on the west turn. The frame was bent and the car was withdrawn. That was the kind of break the Ford team could have used had it been in a position to take advantage of it. But by that time the Ferrari P4’s had moved into contention.vnREAt one point, during the routine pit stops, two of the Fords, those driven by Mario Andretti and Richie Ginther and by A. J. Foyt and Dan Gurney, were in 2nd and 3rd places. But no Ford ever enjoyed the lead.
