Wyatts Warriors—Best Ever at McAuleyBy RON HUTCHISON News Herald Sports EditorCoach Jim Wyatt has fashioned the winningest basketball team in the 30-year history of McAuley Regional high school and it appears that next year’s team may.be an even greater one.His present combined varsity and “B” team record of 32-2 is no accident. It's no accident that McAuley leads the Little Eight Conference and is seeded* number one in the present Little Eight Conference tournament being held at McAuley Regional. It’s no accident that with an enrollment of less than 200, Jim Wyatt has molded one of the best Class M basketball squads in this section of the state and the best “B” team.“Last year we won only five games while losing 10,” Jim explains, “but even in a losing season the boys were gaining that valuable experience necessary for a winning season like this year.’’ Wyatt adds. It’s real satisfying for me as a coach to see those same boys who lost so many games last year come back this year and feci the pride of a winning season.”Previously, the best year Me-Auley has had on the hardwoods was in 1950-51 under CoachJesse (Chief) Meadows. McAuley was then called St. Peter's. Coach Meadows tutored his '50-51 team to 19 straight varsity wins for a season record of 23-5, St. Peter’s went to the state tournament that year, but lost their first game.Coach Meadows had only one losing season during the 10 years (1944-53) he coached basketball at the school. There are many ingredients that combine a coach and his team into a winning unit, but the most outstanding is the fact that Coach Wyatt knows and enjoys the game of basketball and has 16 competitive pupils who respect his judgment. I'm not really strict with my hoys,” Wyatt Explains, but there's never any goofing-off. We bear down every minute we're on the court, whether in a game or in practice.STATISTICS AND SCOUTINGCoach Wvatt is a great believer in statistics and scouting. “1 scout any and every team that we will have to play. Jim says. “I’m able to discover their defensive weaknesses, the offensive threats they pose, their point getters, whether they drive or screen, and many things that are going to improve our scoring capabilities against them.” Jim keeps a running statistical account of all games played— the number of rebounds each player retrieves on both the varsity and B teams, points scored, number of assists, field goal percentage, and scoring average.Wyatt says these statistics give him an index to the improvement a player has made over a period of several games and can sometimes reveal things not noticed during actual games. These statistics also give the hoys a great deal of incentive, Wyatt says. It makes them work harder towards self-improvement. Updated statistic sheets are posted on the school’s bulletin hoard where the players are free to compare the results of their basektball hustle with that of others on the team.McAuley’s Warriors is a fitting nickname since every gymnastic gladiator on Wyatt’s starting lineup heads the list in one of five statistical categories.Bob Todd, 6-1 forward, leads the Warrior scoring campaign with 13 points per game. Although 13 points per game is not a spectacular average, this serves to indicate the well-balanced attack the Warriors are capable of establishing. Nine players scored against Alba last Friday night on the “A” team.Bill Gory’s free throw touch has earned him the distinction as the leading McAuley charity tosser with an 84 per cent completion mark. Gory is second in field goal percentage with a 44 per cent completion mark.Tom Rawling cleared the boards 23 times against Alba last Friday night to raise his rebounding average to 18 per game. Tall Tom is the biggest man on the Warriors squad, standing 6-5, and leads his closest teammate competitor by nearly 110 rebounds.Mike Canton, 6-0 guard, leads the Warriors in scoring assists, but with only a 7 point per game average was certainly no scoring ace—before he replaced his eyeglasses with contact lens. Canton scored 27 points against Alba last Friday night in his first game after obtaining his “eye openers,” and 14 against Goodman Wednesday night.Chuck Roderique leads the Warriors in field goal percentage having connected on 53 per cent of his shots this season.Certainly any coach would be fortunate to have the talents of such a versatile starting five-some, but Coach Wyatt is surrounded by good fortune. BENCH DEPTHDenny Laster is a 6-2 senior whom Wyatt says, “can really help us.” Skip Gant, is a 6-2 senior whom Wyatt explains is a very versatile player. Two other reserves, Horace* Williams, 6-1 senior, and Dave Tuttle, 5-10, combined with “B” team starter Greg Schriever in the second half against Liberal earlier this season to collect 40 points in loss than two periods. That's what most coaches long for, but seldom acquire—depth.Greg (Scheurich) is the fin-est shooting high school boy I've ever seen,” Wyatt says. He never gets excited, he stays cool and really puts a spark into both the players and the crowd when he enters either an ‘A’ or ‘B’game.” Scheurich has sparked the “B” team with his 13 points per game average to a team scoring average of 79 points per game. McAuley’s “B” squad, which Coach Wyatt affectionately refers to as his “Go-Go” team, has won 15 straight games this season and are 12-0 in conference play.Coach Wyatt is no newcomer to athletic competition, Jim is a 1963 graduate of Kansas State College at Pittsburg where he took his bachelor’s degree in physical education and where he is presently working on his masters. In 1957, Jim, then only 20 years old and a graduate of the now Jasper County junior college, signed a professional baseball contract, with the Cleveland organization in the American League. Wyatt played his first year with North Platte in the Rookie League. In 1958 he played shortstop for Coco, Fla., and Reading, Pa., both in the Cleveland organization.ASSISTANT COACHThe following year Jim moved into the Kansas City organization seeing action with Sarasota, Fla. It was this experience that ultimately earned him the position as assistant baseball coach and head pitching coach for the Kansas State College at Pittsburg baseball team in 1963 where he graduated that same year.Looking forward to next basketball season Wyatt feels that his McAuley Warriors should have an even better team than they have this year, much to the displeasure of Little Eight conference coaches.“We will have a better running and shooting team next season. Jim explains, “although { we’ll be lacking a horse.”By way of conjecture, it appears that next season’s Mc-| Auley Regional high school War-| riors will not need the height j they presently possess in 6-5 ; Tom Rawlings.Coach Wyatt is confident of a | well-rounded ball club for next season, but Is justifiably skeptical concerning the status of the Little Eight Conference.
