Fighting Each Other Not NewTo OuthousesIt won't be a new event when ( the Sioux City boxing twins, Gale 1 and Gayus Outhouse, square off | in an exhibition feature during^ the first two nights of the Cedar Rapids Golden Gloves tourna- 1 ment.The Gloves, sponsored by The Gazette-KCRG Charities, Inc.. and the Young Men’s bureau, is scheduled at Memorial coliseum, Feb. 14-15-16. IThe famous twins, whose story j* was termed “too fantastic” to be ( used as the basis for a forthcom- 1 ing movie, wound up as finals op- I iponents in almost every boxing tournament thev ever entered.(It started in a high school tourney, with Gale whipping : t Gayus in the finals. Then, in 1945, it wound up the same way in the Sioux City GG tourney, with Gale again getting the nod.Finally, in 1946, Gayus grew tired of fighting Gale. So previous to the weighing-in, he took 3 aboard a load of bananas and water. The added weight boosted i him to the 135 pound class.Both boys w-on in their divisions, and then went to the quarterfinals at Chicago. jBy ’48, with both boys at 135 ■ pounds, they were finally allowed J to separate, with Gale boxing in! Sioux City and Gayus going to ^ Omaha. Both won again and weht ^ to Chicago. jrHere, it was Gale that toppled ! r in the quarterfinals while Gayus { moved on to the semis. In ’49, they tried the same system, with Gayus failing in the semis. But this time, brother Gale went on ^ to w in the 135-pound crown, a clouting Don Mason of Milwau- £ kee. the man who eliminated v brother Gayus. ^Later, Gale took the intercity -title from a New York foe and then won the international amateur bout.Now% both have turned pro, and often wind up punching each other around in exhibitions and in training. Sometimes Gale wins and s»netimes its Gayus, but it usually winds up a draw.Fans who have seen both think they often fight harder against each other than they do in bouts with oiifciide opponents.The boys have been boxing for;13 years, starting their career in their neighborhood at South Sioux City, with the encouragement of an older brother, Ed.Their appearance in the Cedar Rapids Golden Gloves will give eastern Iowra fans a chance to see two of the most fabulous amateur fighters in boxing history.
