Schwantes, Lieder earn state berthsBill Oim»twl/Glt;»«rt* StoHWisconsin's Brian Good drives against Loy Vaught.STOUGHTON—Satisfied competitors with good times marked the Stoughton Sectional high school boys’ swimming competition Saturday afternoon at Stoughton High.Freestylers David Schwantes of Janesville Craig and Craig Lieder of Milton each places in this week’s W1AA state swim meet at the University of Wisconsin Nata-torium.Schwantes won the 100-yard freestyle (: 48.64) while Lieder touched out Waukesha North’s Matt Bosin by two one-hundreths of a second for the 500-yard freestyle championship.Overall, Waukesha North edged Beloit Memorial for the the sectional title by two points. 278-276. Craig was fourth with 210 points while Milton was seventh 157 and Janesville Parker finished eight in the 13-team field, collecting 112 points. For Parker. Dan Turner placed second in the 200-yard backstroke (1:00.12) for the top individual finish. James Smith was fifth in the 50-yard freestyle (:23.29), while Parker’s 200-yard medley relay and 400-yard freestyle relay teams claimed sixth places in each event. Turner, Kevin Waddell, Erik Johnson and James Smith competed in each relay for the Vikings. In leading Craig, Schwantes also took third in the 200-yard freestyle (1:48.48) and chipped in with Brad Briney, David Latka and Monty Meister to finish second in the 400-yard freestyle relay in 3:20.25 to establish a new school record.Meanwhile, it was touch and go for Lieder all day.The Milton senior, who finished second in state 500 freestyle competition last season, battled Bosin in two events.Bosin touched out Lieder in the 200 yard freestyle. The Milton swimmer claimed a 1:46.65 but Bosin won with 1:46.45. Lieder came back to win the 500 with a 4:51.66 to Bosin’s 4:51.68“It was classic races and nice competition,” Milton coach Tom Lieder said.In looking at the meet, Lieder said his son might have fared better in the 200 had he not been en-• Meet results/SBtered in the 200 medley relay.“We swam him in the medley relay and that might have slowed him down ” Lieder said. “We were thinking more of the team, trying to qualify more for state.”Meanwhile, Craig swim coach Sam Loizzo was encouraged by Schwantes’ sectional performances.“I think Dave should be in the top six with a chance of beating any one of them,” Loizzo said.Schwantes, who finished seventh in the 100 freestyle at last season's state meet, was equally pleased with his effort.“I just went as fast as I could,” Schwantes said of his 100 freestyle performance. “I couldn’t go any faster.”Loizzo credited Schwantes’ quick start in the 100 for leading him to the championship.“He had a much better start in the 100 than the 200,” Loizzo said “He’s the kind of kid that if he starts bad he’ll lock up in a slower mode. ”So, the Cougars will definitely have Schwantes at state in the 100, and his clocking in the 200 freestyle should be good enough to fit in among the next top 16 times in the state. “If he misses in the 200, I’ll be very surprised,” Loizzo said.Turner looks to be the best bet for Parker. In addition, Loizzo is expecting Craig’s 400 freestyle relay team, which finished fifth at state last year, to register a better time.“Next week we should have an outstanding time,” Loizzo said. “Maybe it could go 3:19 or 3:18 and that will stand as a (school) record for a long time. ”Also, Briney, who finished sec--ond in the 200-yard individual medley (2:05.97) is a candidate for a state berth. However, Meister’s 5:14 clocking for a sixth-place finish in the 500 freestyle may not be good enough to put him back into state competition in the event. Meister finished 16th at state in the event last season.
