Mi nookaA new athletic director was named at Minooka, Ray Adams, who succeeded Ron Lehman, now in the principal position. Adams brings veteran credentials from Joliet EastHigh, where he performed in the same administrative duty as athletic director.Along with Adams, a new head football coach was named, Rick Beck. Beck carried an outstanding underclassman coaching record at El Paso High.At Minooka, Beck took an undersized team and helped motivate them to a 5-4 overall season, 4-3 in the NortheastConference and a tie for fourth in the nine-team allignment of the conference.Three players were named to the all-conference team: They included Mark Mitchell, theteam MVP; Bruce Miller, thetop offensive threat; and Steve Geiss, a top linebacker.Mitchell led the team with 87 tackles and 44 assists. On offense, Mitchell gained 453 yards in 94 carries for a 4.8 average per gain and four touchdowns. Miller led the team in rushing with 864 yards in 195 carries for a 4.4 average and eight touchdowns and four two-point conversions.On defense, Geiss had 77 tackles and 48 assists, second best on the club Joehind Mitchell. Tom Wirtz had 30 tackles and 14 assists, Ed Norton had 35 tackles and 16 assists and George Goldasich had 31 tackles and 16 assists.Quarterback Dave Bretsch completed 15 of 45 passes for a 33 per cent ratio. The top receiver was Terry Glennon, who nabbed 11 for 185 yards for a 16.8 average per catch.New tennis courts and an auxiliary gym went through beginning construction phases.Minooka High produced two state Class A wrestlingchampions and many qualifiers during the 1976 year.In wrestling, Mark Mitchell (145) 36-0 and Reed Perry (155) 34-2 became Grundy County’s first Class A state champions as they led coach Dave Decker’s team to first place finishes in the IHSA District, the Peotone Tournament, and a fourth in the IHSA state meet. Also helping Minooka to a 12-11 overall and a third in the NEC were Steve Geiss (132) 25-7 and Tom Alberico (138 ) 22-10.The track Indians, coached by Joe Reische, were 10-1 in dual meets, first in the IHSA District, second in the NEC, fourth in the Joliet East Relays, and fifth in the Lisle Relays.They finished the season qualifying seven events for the state Class A meet. These events were; High Jump — Mark Dean ; Pole Vault — Chi Kovel; 880 — Rich Anderson; Mile — Tom Clennon; 440 Relay — John Underhill, J. Thor son, R. Perry, B. McMillan; 2 Mile Relay — Clennon, Drew, J. Underhill, Tom Smith; Mile Relay — Perry, Drew, J. Underhill, and J. Fillipitch.Wayne Greenbeck’s basketball team was 17-8 on the season winning the NEC, the Plainfield Turkey Tournament, and finishing second at the Plano tourney.Dan Mason, 6-5 forward, was selected NEC all-conference and led the team in point production and rebounding. Dave Mitchell was another top performer.Rick Beeler’s baseball team 13-7 on the season won the Morris IHSA District, tied for second in the NEC and lost to Aurora West 6-3 in the Regional final. The Indians were led by the hitting of Dave Mitchell ( .424) and the pitching of Dave Woodhead 6-0, Kevin McEvilly 4-3, and Steve Mauk 2-3.
