Auburn InvitationalTracksters roll to winBy Rich Donnell Plainsman SportswriterThe Auburn University men’s track team had an easy victory Saturday night in the Invitational Indoor Meet held here which featured junior high and high school competition.Auburn, which had eight first-place finishes, scored 83 points to runner-up Georgia’s 38. Western Carolina followed with 23, while Troy State’s 15, Fisk’s 13, Albany State with 10.5, West Georgia with 10 and Alabama State’s six rounded out the men’s field.“The meet went real well,” Coach Mel Rosen said. “The high school and college coaches who came raved about it. They were glad to have the competition. I think every coach deserves to have a shot at a meet like this, although one is enough. A lot of time and work were put into this kind of meet.”The Auburn women finished second in their competition, scoring 23 points, which was not enough to overcome the winning Memphis Shelby Track Club with 42 points. Tuskegee Institute had 14 points and Alabama State gained 13 points.Tony Easley and Rob Will performed admirably for the Tigers. Easley set a meet record with a triple jump of 49-7.5, and Will put the shot 58-.5, breaking his own record of 57-7.5 which he established last week.Olympic sprint specialist Harvey Glance took his first indoor victory this season in the special 60-yard dash with a time of 6.34. Easley was runner-up at 6.36 and Cliff Surratt from Western Carolina was a distant third.“I was real pleased with the way they performed,” Rosen said. “I guess Easley was the highlight, setting the record under some difficult conditions. Will set the shot record and the rest competed well; we don’t worry about times because you just can’t get them in the Coliseum. “Glance is still not up to par, but he was able to win even though he didn’t start that well. He has a few nagging injuries but in a couple of weeks I think he’ll be back.”Terry Baker of Auburn was first in the two-mile run at 9:08.5 and Jon Fox finished ahead of the field in the mile run at 4:20.1, beating Faulkner’s Tim Leyden.James Walker and John Lewter finished 1-2 for Auburn in the 60-yard high hurdles at 7.29 and 7.36 respectively. Walker and Lewter also contributed to Auburn’s new meet record in the mile relay. They ran with Smith and Frugoli, clocking 3:29.1.Other high placers for the Tigers included Mark Jordan’s winning time in the 1000-yard run at 2:19.5, with Robert McDuffie second. Allen Pef-fer was second in the 880-yard run (2:00.7), and third in the 600, while Ross Schaffstall placed second behind record-set-ter Will in the shot put (55-4.75).Strong outings were given by ‘76 Olympic team member James Barrineau of Georgia. Steve Riddick finished first in that meet ahead of Ed Preston and Houston McTear. Auburn’s Easley also entered the dash.Auburn’s Lewter turned in a fine performance in the 60-yard high hurdles, (7.3), finishingthird behind Olympians Willie Davenport and Charles Foster. The Tigers’ Walker was fifth in the same meet. Willie Smith took fifth in the 500-yard run behind cowinners Stan Vinson of Washington and Richard Massey of HOward. At the Auburn Invitational about 1500 athletes participated before light crowds. The competition began Friday night and ended Saturday night. Rosen was not terribly impressed with the fan turnout but admitted some progress in fan interest.“The crowd was better at this meet,” Rosen said. “You’ve got to keep teaching the crowd and getting them interested. It’s probably the best we’ve had. The students just don’t seem to come to these meets, as in football and basketball. Now basketball is losing and they’re not coming to those games. A lot of students like to go home on weekends and this is certainly a factor.“It's getting better. If they don’t want to see Glance and Walker, I don’t know what they want. These guys are All-Americas. I don’t know what the students could be looking for, and I don’t have the answer to explain it.” to explain it.”/\ AuburnCBCenterWE HAVE ALLYOUR CB NEEDS769 East Glenn AvenuePhone 821-8507
