Both Raton and (Jlayton were whipped by Roy last weekend, and Des Moines won the norIhurn New Mexico Intorscho-lnstic Athletic League tournament at Maxwell in a breeze.Predicting the outcome of basketball games in district ono is dangerous, especially during the season. Tournaments run fairly true to form.Take Dawson. The Miners, afast, aggressive outfit whose onlv lack is height, had mopped up Raton, Clayton, Cimarron, Roy, Dos Moines and Springer. Then they hit Wagon Mound, an unheralded outfit coached by Bob Heinsohn, his first vcar there. The Trojans nipped Dawson 36-S4, to everyone's amazement They came back to Dawson's own floor a week later and almost did it again. The Miners edged that one, 36-35.Wagon Mound and Dawson don't meet again durinc the season, but the chances are they*11 collide in the district tournament and settle it out then.Dawson, whose only other defeat this season was a three-point loss to the tough Espanola club, is about the same team Coach Fd Cloven has fielded for tho past two years. The team features the rhuoling of Jimmy Chavez and the c'nssy floor work of John Lnncieri. The Miners whipped the AlbuQucrquc Bulldogs in Albu» quernuo two weeks ago.Wagon Mound's power is'bnilt around Johnny Wood, u versatile six-three renter. Wood is n crack shot, but he enjoys decoying (ho opposing defense into u corner nrnl setting up shots for Joe Aragon who boasts a high scoring average.
