Friday, (mow oy hoy ratrtcK)forward to improving tneir rccoraLady Colonels down Braves and TehachapiBy Nick BarnardShafter’s Lady Colonels have put together a three-game winning streak which may continue this week.They compiled two of these victories against Taft last Tuesday, and Tehachapi on Friday.Karina Ochoa scored a basket and a free throw to give the Colonels an early 3-0 lead in Tuesday’s contest with the Bobcats.With less than 2 minutes remainingin the first, Corrina Alvidrez followed a Taft score with one of her own.Shafter had a 6-4 advantage by the end of the first period.Ochoa, Alvidrez, Becky Chewn-ing, Amber Anderson, Beth Zachary, Lisa Ortiz, Petra Castellon and Tonya Thornton teamed up for a 12-0 romp early in the second quarter.This propelled them to a 20-12 half-time lead.Zachary scored the first basket of the third quarterr when she grabbedan offensive rebound.Thirty seconds later Chewning scored a free throw to give Shafter a 23-12 lead. Then, Taft scored theirfirst basket of the half.Kristen Farmer assisted Quinta Lyons for a deuce to end the third with a 29-18 advantage.In the fourth quarter, the Colonels tight man-to-man defense caused the Bobcats to force passes.The forced passes allowed several steals collected by Chewning and Deedra Cobb.Shafter finished it with the 15-point victory.Alvidrez and Ochoa led the Colonels with 8 points each. Zachary and Cobb each led with four rebounds.Chewning led with seven steals and four assists.Shafter and TehachapiChewning had three steals and 6points in the first 5:00 against Tehachapi.The Colonels annihilated a team that had done the same to them in theleague opener.The final was 25-9, Shafter.Zachary, Anderson, Ochoa and Ortiz assisted in putting Shafter ahead 12-2 by the end of the first period.Cobb, Farmer, Thornton, Castellon, Lyons and Donna Epp were inserted frequently to extend the lead and put it out of reach.Chewning led the Colonels with 6 points, four steals and two assists.LADIES ON 7A
