■ Ex-St. Louis Cardinals kicker is part of a list the Seminoles hope to narrow to one this week.TALLAHASSEE (AP) - Former NFL kicking great Jim Bakken and University of Minnesota men’s athletic director McKinley Boston are among 44 candidates for the athletic director’s vacancy at Florida State, school officials said Tuesday.Five women are on the list, including Barbara Palmer, a former women’s athletic director at Florida State.Wayne Hogan, who is serving as interim athletic director, is also a candidate for the position. Hogan, 38, has spent the last 13 years as the school’s sports publicist.University spokesman Frank Murphy said the school hoped to decide on a new athletic director by the end of the week. The deadline for applications was midnight Monday.Boston, 49, a former football star at Minnesota, and Dave Hart Jr., athletic director at East Carolina University, were scheduled to be interviewed by the selection committee today, a Florida State spokesman said.“It was an easy decision for me to say Iwas going to stay at Minnesota because there are still things that I’m trying to do here,” Boston said. “But Florida State is one of the premier programs, and there’s still tremendous growth potential, too.”Boston, who earned a doctorate in education from Montclair (N.J.) State, has been men’s athletic director since 1991. If chosen, he would oversee men’s and women’s programs at Florida State.Bakken, one of pro football’s great placekickers during his days with the St. Louis Cardinals, is now the associate athletic director at the University of Wisconsin. .Boston’s candidacy has created concern at his Big Ten alma mater wherethe president and basketball coach hope he’ll reject the Florida State job.“We want Mac to stay and I am doing everything I can to get him to stay,” said University of Minnesota president Nils Hsselmo.News of Boston’s decision surprised Gopher men’s basketball coach Clem Haskins, who said he would seriously consider leaving if Boston leaves.“It’s hard to get a guy who knows athletics and understands the ins and outs from a coaching standpoint, and also have the ability and knowledge to deal with the NCAA,” Haskins said. “When you have all that in one, you do everything you can to try to keep that, or you’ll losethat.”Boston, who is black, was encouraged to apply for the job at last month’s NCAA convention by Florida State President Talbot “Sandy” D’Alemberte.Florida State has become one of the nation’s dominant football powers in the last decade, largely through its ability to attract top black athletes. In last season’s preseason football guide, the Seminoles listed 59 blacks, 21 whites and three His-panics.The athletic director’s job opened in October when Bob Coin was fired after the state Ethics Commission ruled he had accepted a cut-rate deal for a new roof at his home from a firm doing business with the school.
