R—RA BIT OF HISTORY: I answerto a recent inquiry, Carthage HighSchool basketball team of 1913 did play in the state tournament, which I was held at Indiana University. I The tournament in that yesteryear was largely an invitational affair, with the strongest teams “invited”to play based largely on seasonrecords and importance.Carthage High that year wascoached by Roy Wisehart, who had come to Carthage as principal and teacher,, who also carried on the coaching of athletic teams on theside. Mr. Wisehart later became State Superintendent of Public Instruction.The 1913 tournament had about32 teams entered that year, all games being played at Indiana University gymnasium. Wingate won the tourney that year, fea-* * r *'' L % ^ * Vtured by the famous Homer Stone-braker, one of the all-time basket* ball greats.Carthage played a 16-game schedule that year, winning 11 and losing five, of which two victories were over Rushville, 24-23 and 17.They lost their first game in the state tourney play to Rochester, 47-13.
