New Orleans, Jan. 31.—Johnny Con-Ion of Chicago retained his title of bantamweight champion by knocking out Karl Denning in the ninth round of their scheduled ten-round bout before the Royal Athletic Club Saturday night.Denning showed steam in the early stages, and in the second round floored the champion, who took the count of four. Until the end of the third round Denning fought in whirlwind fashion. His work was superior to that of Ooulson, and the champion was taken completely off his feet.In the second, after several stiff jabs to the face and body, Denning delivered a powerful right swing that caught Coulin squarely on the jaw. Ths was the first time a bantam has ever made the champion take the? count.After that, however, Coulon was on his guard and Denning was never able to follow up his advantage. After the fourth round Denning bled profusely from severe punishment. It was one of the fastest bouts seen here this winter.
