R, WELLSV1LLE, NEW YORK _Frlday, Pecembe^31,J971Portville Defeats FriendshipFRIENDSHIP — Towering, talented Portville overcame a stubborn Friendship basketball team Thursday night, defeating the Eagles, 79-61, and winning the championship of the Friendship Holiday Basketball Tournament.In the consolation game, Fillmore defeated Bolivar, 70-50.Paul Dorman of Portville, voted the tourney’s most valuable player, was the big difference in his team’s conquest of Friendship, scoring 35 points on 12 field goals and 11 free throws. The lithe Panther center was virtually impossible to stop, connecting on shots of all varieties and from any distance. He meshed jumpers from as far out as 20 feet, drove the middle and baseline for layups, frequently rose above the crowd around the basket to tally on tip-ins.The Panthers took command of the game early in the third period, after completing the first half with a 36-27 advantage. They adjusted to the aggressive Friendship press, which had caused them con-' siderable difficulty in the second quarter, and began utilizing their greater height ofi the boards.With three minutes elapsed in■the second half, and with the Eagles still within striking distance, 44-34, Portville took over for the next three minutes and outscored the tournament hosts, 11-1. Following a successful free throw by teammate Keith McDevitt, Dorman tallied on a tap to put his team ahead, 47-34. Scott Ralston hit from the top of the key and Dorman came back with a foul shot. After Friendship’s Dave Geffers sanka charity toss, making it 50-35, Portviile, the winners’ Dale Schmidt sank a singleton and Ralston connected on another jumper and Friendship, starting to tire, trailed by an insurmountable 18 points. The Eagles were cold throughout the period, and Dave Geffers who performed brilliantly for the losers, went two minutes into the final stanza before registering his first basket of the half.Supplementing Dorman's big scoring effort with Scott Ralston who had 18. Geffers and Dean Carney topped the Eagles with 15 apiece while Leonard Hodgehad 12.“We just couldn’t contain Dorman,” Friendship’s Dave Karl noted after the game, “I was quite satisfied with our playthough. We had that cold streakin the third quarter, but other»thah that we played well.”tn the curtain-raiser, Fillmore’s Steve Wilson threw in 26 points to lead his club over Bolivar and to a third place finish in the tournament.With the score knotted at 16-all with six minutes left in the second period, the Green Wave got its break into gear and outscored Bolivar, 17-3 for a lead at halftime of 33-19.
