Friendship, Portville Gain Triumphs In Tourney OpenersFRIENDSHIP -• H will he host Friendship and Portville meeting Thursday night in the champion ship game of the Friendship Invitational Basketball Tournament, as both clubs recorded wins Tuesday evening in the tourney's opening games.The Eagles of Friendship defeated Bolivar, 57-45. in an encounter which was close up to the final five minutes of play, when the winners, utilizing a persistent press and some strong rebounding, pulled away from the Bulldogs. Dave Goffers played a key role in the victory, tormenting the Bolivar guards with his harassing of the press, and topping both teams in scoring with 27 points, 13 of these coming on free throws.Portville. 62-48 winners over Fillmore in the curtain-raiser, was led by 6-5 Paul Dorman who parleyed lz field goals and three charity tosses into 27 points. The slender Dorman was deadly with a jumper from as far out as 20 feet, and picked tip several buckets from underneath, either on short follow-ups or taps.The Bolivar - Friendship match was a see-saw affair with neither team able to take command until Friendship went on its final quarter tear. Jim Zacher gave the Eagles a 1-0 lead on a foul shot in the first half-minute of play, but Bolivar took a 23-20 lead to the locker room at halftime, due mainly io some outside shooting by RickCornelius and some strong board work by Mark Crowley, Friendship finally went ahead • with 1:30 remaining in the third quarter, when Leonard Hodgesank a field goal to give his team a 33-32 advantage With 12 seconds left Bolivar knotted the count at 35-all on Don Paftie's free throw hut (Jeffers countered with a singleton from the foul line and Bruce Emery hit on n ten foot jumper at the end of period three, and Friendship was ahead to slay, 38-35.With better than five minutes left in I he contest, Bolivar (railed by just four, but the Bulldogs began to wilt under the Eagles’ pressuring defense, and began turning the ball over. Friendship shot out to a 55-41 lead over the next four minutes, with Goffers leading the onslaught with ten points, scoring off steals and fast breaks, in discussing his team's win,Coach Dave Karl said, I don’t think there was a turning point, our press just got to them. We may have taken Bolivar a little lightly in the first half, but we did play a good second half.“! guess I have to single out Goffers; he played fine defense and scored 27 points. Porlville’s n fine ball club; but if we get it together we'll give them a game.”Rick Cornelius led the Bolivar scorers with 14.Fillmore marie a fine second quarter comeback to close the gap in its game with Portville, but the taller Panthers puttogether a big eight minutes of basketball following intermission to down the Green Wave.Trailing 20-9 at the end of the first period, Fillmore outseored its Cattaraugus foe, 17-12 in the next eight minutes to draw to within fi, 32-26, at halftime. The spurt was led by guard Roy Bielewiez who had eight points during this time, while Dorman, who had five field goals for Portville in the initial period, cooled down and could connect for just four points.The turning point came after four minutes had elapsed in the second half. Holding a slender 39-33 advantage, Portville took command of the rebounding and wrapped up the encounter.
