One-Armed DriverJimmy Maguire is not your everyday race car driver.The Fitchburg native, grandson of Mrs. Ora Rochon of this town, was fast approaching Indy 500 form back in 1964 when he became involved in a brutal, two-car crash during the USAC sprint car race in Ohio. Maguire lost his right arm in the addident, and remained hospitalized for five months.Determined to continue racing, Maguire looked on his handicap as a mere temporary setback. And through the use of a specially designed hook-socket system which enabled him to steer, the courageous driver made good on his comeback.lie s 34-years-old now and lives in Somerville, N.J. does Jimmy Maguire.
