FIGHT WAS ABOUT A ( STAND-OFFWilliams and Clark in Rattling 15-Round MatchHonors Were About Even in the Summing Up—Last Round Saw Some Slashing Work.Barney Williams’ burst of speed in the last round was the only thing that saved him for a draw decision in hi3 fight with Jeff Clark, the Joplin negro, last night. Many were more or less prejudiced in their belief, but it is a fact that Clark had to work on the aggressive in nearly every round.Williams is a v/onder for a twenty-year-old. Both men weighed in about even and they fought before the largest house since the Langford-Clark match. In the first few rounds Bar-: ney showed more fight than he did in all the others except the last. How-! ever, he was continually on the alert for an opening. Clark landed more blows to the chin and body than did his white opponent.| On various occasions the hard blows that the negro sent in were nearly stunners. Although the “cinder” was successful in getting in many good punches, he missed three times as many as he sent home. Williams was continually putting his wicked left to the negro’s face and eyes. At the close of the bout the “smoke” had one “lamp” dangerously near shut. But j the negro in return for these little tokens put several trade marks on the ' j German’s face.i The last round was for a knockout and both the white and black fighters rushed, hoping to land a love-tap that . , would put the other to sleep. They• 1 slammed indiscriminately, their blows ! leaving openings that would have• j been good for their purpose had eith-| er fighter played cautious., j The two preliminaries were good. [ James Pappas, the terribue Greek chili chef and shine artist, won a decision over Battling Smith of Oklahoma City. “Bull” Morrow, a lad who weighs in at 165, walloped the , sound out of G. H. Bell. In the third . | round of this fight Bell dropped to . the floor and took the count. How-! ever, he was not kicked down by t Morrow, hut thought it best to avoid 5 some of the fierce onslaughts of the , j Joplin boy. Bell hails from Spring-, i field, where the night before he succeeded in knocking out a celebrity up there.
