Sparked by the consistent accuracy of Louis Torres, the Canyon High Cougars swept through four games this weekend to take the championship trophy in the Moulton Invitational Basketball Tournament.The Cougars, who raised their season mark to 15 wins, two losses, defeated the host team — Moulton — 62-49 Saturday night in the championship game Torres, who scored 86 points in the tournament, hit for 19 points against Moulton.Coach Ben Hardy hopes that the experience and the first-place trophy will spur the team on in 1969 when the local club opens the District 29-AA race His club will face Boerne, a strong second-place finisher last year, in the Canyon gym at 8 p.m. Jan. 3. The Greyhounds trounced Canyon twice last season.Only a miracle-like finish in the semifinal game Friday-night enabled Canyon to move into Saturday night’s championship tilt The Cougars, who had earlier taken Hallettsville, 45-36, and Yoakum, 51-45, edged past Wael-der. 52-51, in that semi-final game — a game which turned out to be the best in the tournament for basketball fans.Trailing the tall Wildcats by 51-45 with just 35 seconds left in the game, Hardy’s red-clad Cougars seemed well on their wav to elimination. ButWthe local boys staged an amazing rally that left spectatorsstunned.In those last few seconds the incomparable Louis Torres sank a long shot and was fouled in the process.When Torres sank his chari* tv toss, Canyon trailed 51-48.A few seconds later, James Hardy made a lay-up on afast break and closed the gapto 51-50.With only one second left on the clock, a foul was called against a Waelder boy. The infraction occurred when Warren Weltner stole the ball and was fouled bv the nervouswWildcat player in the process While his opponents stood helplessly about, Warren — who received a one-and-onecall — calmly proceeded to sink both shots — enough to send the overjoyed Cougars into Saturday night’s championship tilt.In that championship game, Canyon again started slowly, but regained its composuremuch earlier than the fourth quarter. Moulton led 16 12 at the end of the initial period, but Torres and Allen Klar, Canyon's tall and talented post man, combined forces and sank three field goals apiece to account for 12 of the 14 Cougar second-quarter points. The local defense tightened, holding the host team to si:c points, and Canyon enjoyed a 26-22 halftime lead.Weltner’s four field goals in the third helped put the game out of reach and after the Cougars led 45-31 at the end of the period, the outcome was never in doubt.In Thursday’s opener, the Cougars again finished strong.outscoring Hallettsville, llt;-6, in the fourth quarter to win, 45-36. Torres again led in the point department, hitting nine shots from the floor and five chanty tosses.
