Twelve Ravens named NAIA Scholar AthletesBenedictine College saw a dozen of its fall sports athletes take home one of the most prestigious academic honors inthe NAIA.Four members of the 2010 Benedictine College football team were named as 2010 Daktronics-NAIA Scholar Athletes when the NAIA recently released the list of 231 student athletes who obtained a 3.5 on a 4.0 scale during the season.Senior safety Frank Roberts, senior inside linebacker Michael Bechina, senior offensive lineman Carlos Pacheco and senior offensive lineman Chris Jones added their names to the academic honor this season.The addition of the four football players gives Benedictine a total of 12 scholar athletes from the fall semester.Several members of the women’s cross country team, the women’s soccer team, the men’s soccer team and the volleyball team were recently named 2010 Daktronics-NAIA Scholar Athletes.Senior Clare Merz and junior Liz Schmitz represented thewomen’s cross country team.Junior Greg Buergler represented the men's soccer team while senior Jenne Enevoldsen, junior Courtney Danze, junior Carissa Gregory and junior Kelsey Mueller all represented the women’s soccer team.Senior Heather Wansing represented the volleyball team.A student-athlete must maintain a minimum grade point average of 3.5 on a 4.0 scale and have achieved junior academic status to qualify for the honor. The honor is also nominated by their respective head coaches.The Benedictine College athletic department not only prides itself on building team which compete on the field but support its athletes so that they can also get the job done in the classroom as well.In all, the cumulative GPA for all of the Benedictine athletic programs was over 3.0 for both the fall of 2009 and spring of 2010 semesters.More than 225 of 456
