Tuesday, December 24. 1974STEVE MINGUSMingus is injured in mat tournamentPORTVILLE—Two Wellsvilie High School sophomores won wrestling championships Saturday, in the Portville Tournament but an accidental blow to senior Steve Mingus’ nose in the finals robbed him of a championship and may have ended his high school career,Mingus was leading 11-1 with 90 seconds left in the championship match in the 177 division when the wrestlers became tangled and Mingus was thrown backward, striking his head.“At first, 1 thought it was the head jolt,” coach Bob Mountain said, “but when I got out on the mat I could see that his nose was just smashed. He must have gotten a knee in the face.”Mingus wanted to finish the match but the referee and Mountain wouldn’t let him.The broken nose diagnosis was confirmed by doctors at Jones Memorial Hospital, who said surgery might be necessary to correct the break.“He was wrestling so well this year, too,” coach Mountain said, he was undefeated this year and just looked tremendous on the mat Saturday. Just before he got hit he turned to me and gave me the thumbs up signal, and Icategory, were the Wellsvilie champions.“Steve Vanskiver pinned every man,” Mountain said, “I don't know why he didn’t get the most valuable wrestler award. Maybe it was because he just outclassed everyone else and his matches weren’t exciting.”“And Bill Barnett beat last year]s Section Six champion in winning his ctass '1Gien Hall took a second for Wellsvilie, defeating Eric Doty of Portville on a 5-0 decision and Randy Miller of Cattaraugus 17-2 before losing to Ron Lewis of Holland on a 9-2 verdict.Mike DiUie and John Horton of Wellsvilie also registered wins. At 119 Horton pinned Vic Sylor of Fillmore in 5:13 before losing to Randy Mohr of Portville and Tom Bentley of Bolivar on decisions and Dillie took a 4*2 decision over Allegany’s Rick Sherwood before losing to Joe Swanson of Portville on a pin and John Wilder of Cattaraugus on a 4-3 decision.Wellsvilie finished fourth in the tournament, one point behind third place Holland.Goes to CardinalsST. LOUIS, Mo. (UPI) — The St. Louis Cardinals Monday purchased the contract of infielder Mick Ketleher, aknow when he does that he’s got the match,”Mingus had pinned one man in an earlier round of the tournament and deeisioned another, 17-4.Steve VanSkiver in the 98 lb. class and Bill Barnett in the 102 103 lb.former Cardinal, from the Houston AstrosKelleher, 27, will be sent to St. Louis’ AAA American Association farm club at Tulsa.
