Even if Winfield hadn't scored a point his floor play could have been enough to keep the Wildcats on top.Jt was a hard defeat for the Shamrocks to suffer. The loss was their fourth straight of the season, their longest losing streak since the 1950-51 season. The setback also just about eliminated the Tide from any hopes of repeating as West Michigan D league champions.! Despite the 16-point deficit. St. Simons played one of their best games of the season. The Rocks never slowed down and never quit fighting but in spite of it they just simply didn’t have the fire-power 1 to match Waikerville.Besides Winfield’s 26 points. 12 of them on free throws, the Wildcats had the sharp shooting of Dick Malburg to fall back on when Winfield wasn’t, connecting. Malburg hit on 10 field goals for 20 points.St. Simon* had good scoring balance with three players hitting in1double figures. Dave Layton, who playeti his usual steady, go6d game, led St. Simons with 15 point*. Fellows and Mike Potter scored St. Simons only points. In the third period Winfield was removed from the game by CoachStanley Stanley and during the time that he was out of there the Tide outscored Waikerville 17-9. They trimmed the margin down from 50-25 to 30-36 and it looked like a possible rally that might swing the balance of the game. However, just as the quarter ended Malburg connected on a jump shot to make it 52-36.The Rocks cut the lead down to 54-40 early in the fourth period but Winfield returned to the game at that point and before the Tide scored again Waikerville was inpossession of a 60-40 lead.St. Simons outscored Waikerville 10-5 in the final three minutes of play but it wasn’t enough to do any more than chop down the final difference between the two teams.Waikerville outrebounded the Rocks 38-27 but the Rocks took a 15-14 edge in jump balls. The 29 jumps were needed to help keep what was already a rough game from becoming a wild melee. The officials did a good job in taming down over-enthusiastic play byboth teams.St. Simons will be in action again Saturday night when they play host to the Free Soil Pirates at the junior high gym. They now have a 1-4 record and Waikerville has a 5-2 mark.In the preliminary game the Little Shamrocks went down to their fifth straight loss of the season in a hard played game that saw Waikerville come out on top 28-27.Don Yeck and Dave Yeck, with eight and six point respectively, paced the Shmrocks.
