* . KThe struggle was long and hard and Oak Park’s grid men were forced to the limit to win a 6 to 3 victory and the national prep title. It was from this squad that came Pete Russell. He later traveled to Chicago University, where his remarkable ability won him the captaincy of the 1915 team and a positionFELECE CARUSOon the all-American. Coach Stagg ranked him with Eckersall and Steffen.In 1911 Oak Park was again undefeated, but played no intersectional game 1912, is undoubtedly the greatest year for the national title. The next year,in Oak Park’s football history. This is the peak of Zuppke’s fame in prep circles. That years’ team was one of all stars and the best ever produced by Oak Park, in the opinion of critics. The backfield was one of the strongest offensive machines qyer produced in the Middle West, with Captain Penn Carolan and Barrett at the half positions, Bart Macomber at quarter and Ralph Shiley at full. Macomber later followed Zuppke to Illinois and captained the University team in 1916. He also won the quarterposition on the all-American. Every member of the team later became famous on college gridirons. In the line Harry Goelitz, Brelas and Voight were the stellar performers.That year again Oak Park was undefeated, trimming Lake Forest 40 to 0 in a post season game. Everett High of Boston was engaged for a post season game at Boston to decide the national championship. Oak Park completely smothered the eastern school with a scintillating shifty open attackthat completely outwitted and befuddled their opponents. They easily capturedthe title with a 32 to 14 win.With such a record behind him, colleges began bidding for the services of Zuppke. Illinois was looking for a new coach and offered him the position. It was accepted and thus ended the career in Oak Park of a great leader. 'Who was to be the new coach was finally decided in the early autumn of 1913, when Glenn Thistlethwaite was selected to fill the vacancy. Mr. Thistlethwaite is a graduate of Earlham College, Indiana, where he was a four letter all star athlete. He chose coaching as a profession and coached at Illinois lt;allege and Earlham for five years previous to his coming to Oak Park.Early in 1913 the press pessimistically predicted the decline of the football star of Oak Park and disinterestedly eyed the efforts of the new coach. On theBILL ABBOTTcontrary, Oak Park again reported a season: of all victories. In a post season intersectional contest Oak Park defeated Clinton, Iowa, 32 .to 14, easily equaling the record of Zuppke’s 1910 squad. = Barrett, Eln and Templeton(Continued on Page 30)
