Lady Generals make a good showing in WascoBy Nick BarnardThe Shafter L-ady Colonels have finished second in each of the tournaments they have participated in this season.'In their own tournament a week ago, they knocked off Stockdale High School 28-14, but was cut down by Centennial 44-26.This put them as the second seed in the final day of competition. This last weekend, Shafter entered the Wasco Tournament. They opened with a 31 -18 victory over Highland High School.it was tough to score many under the basket in this game for theColonels.HQwever, Lisa Ortiz still managed to gather 6 points from there.Amber Anderson, Beth Zachary, and Becky Chewning were the strength in this game for the Colonels, combining for 24 points, mainly from the outside.Anderson, Ortiz, and Zachary combined for 20 rebounds.Their next contest was with the Foothill Lady Trojans. They pulled out a squeaker 27-26.Shafter led 18-10 at the half, but by the beginning of the fourth quarter, the Trojans had creeped back into thegame 10-17.Foothill made three 3-point shots in a row for a 26-26 score late in the contest.With seconds remaining, Ortiz was fouled and made a clutch free throw to win it.The Colonels were unable to score frequently against the number oneseeded Bakersfield High School Lady Drillers, who started three players over 6 feet tall.The Colonels also had just come off of that close win earlier in the day while BHS was racking up 40 to 50points against their opponents.The Colonels lost 23-8, but the MVP of the tournament, Mindy Wilburn from BHS, was held for no points in the game against Shafter.This was mainly attributed to outstanding defense by Quinta Lyons, Lisa Ortiz, and Karina Ochoa.Shafter coaches Rod Creekbaum and Ken Allen said they were very impressed with their teams defense.Calling the team “coachable,” both men were optimistic about the team's future in the league.
