Merwin was called upon ancafter paying his tribute to the Tigerand all connected with the management, Mr. Merwin gave some infornation concerning the plan to establisla gymnasium in Massillon. He saitthat the plan was to have a member•hip of at least three hundred, whlt;shouldthe privileges to be obtained. As sooithe necessary number of member!sad been secured by those now circupaperwould be circulated. He also said thaalready one person had asked for th«honor of heading the stockholders’ lisiwith a thousand dollar subsenptiorandbe only too willing to put their nameson the paper. Before this can be donethe membership is to be secured.A building will be erected andequipped with all modern gymnasiumappliances. Mr. Merwin said that hethought that some arrangement couldbe made by which the future foot ballteams of the city could use the gymnasium during the fall season.The plan of the promoters includesmore than the maintaining of a boys'gymnasium, although that is the primary cause for the organization. Theplan is to take in men, women andgirls and have hours for each and haveinstructors. Prominent specialists andprofessional men of the city have offered to give lectures to the young people upon matters pertaining to thephysical being. These lectures will bebut a part of the instructions givenplan has been worked out for hs and has been formulated fromthe suggestions of many. All interestedin the yotith of the city are asked to£)Ugive encouragement to the werk. TheStockholders will incorporateganizatioh andbership papers will not be liable.Those ta only membership papers will have’ the same benefits as theStockholders. All kinds of bathsbe provided, a running track, a bas-ball floor, with other equipmentthought to be necessary in a well sup-ied gymnasium.After Mr. Merwin had outlined hisplans many present gave him a word of encouragement and pledged to givehim the necessary assistance as far aspower. Membership papers are now being circulated.Base ball wres mentioned b\ one ortwo speakers, but the information wasgiven out that as yet nothing is knownof a team for next season by thosewho managed the team last summer.The promise was made that due effortswould be used to have a base ball teamnext season.Each speaker dwelt upon the factthat Massillon, through its foot ballteam, has won an enviable record forclean sports. Toasts were drunk to allwho made the pa3t season a success.The testimonial to Mr. Wise wasbrought to a close by drinking thetoast proposed by Mayor Bell “to thehealth and prosperity of Massillon’sforemost Citizen, a friend of the Tigers, J. W. McClymonds. ” All drankthe toast while standing.
