The old fault—weakness in front of goal—-was againapparent. The Reserves, playing at home, got the better of Brentford by 3—1, but the gamewas fobbed of much of its interest through the unfortunate accident to Roddy Mclw-od when within a stene's-throw of the ground. The no st rabid partisan of the United can scarcely hope for victory when Liverpool pay their visit, on January 5, in the National ('up competition. Still, with au improvement in the attacking department, n aooti fight may he anticipated^ The Loudon League fixture, at Canning Town, with the Hotspur Reserves, has been brought forward from Christmas lkiy to Monday afternoon.lt;tn Saturday next Ixiwer Clapton Imperial will he entertained in the same competition, while the Southern Leaguers are fuililliug the return engagement atSouthampton.Portsmouth.I p to tins morning Portsmouth hadplayed U2 matches this season, winning 1,5, losing o, and drawing 3; the goal average standing at 40 for, and 34 against.1 his does not compare at ail favourably with last season's ligures for the same number of matches played. The position of alfiirs then was : played 2J, won 16, lo.-l 4, drawn 2, goals for 53, against 19.A- was generally anticipated, the 1 Ye I-ni'ut ii public uni not rush over t .lemselvcs in their anxiety to see Prest- nNitn laid ma friendly at Fratt.cn Park lt;a ;-.ttarday ; owing, of course, to the hiukeiiaseo of the previous week. But f'.r ail that the home players gave a muchbet'(r account of themselves.By this time the club's directors must have discovered that it was an error to guarantee LlOO to such clubs as .'doke and Pivston North End.The spectators at the naval town have been ginl portsmen so far, hut they have a limit beyond which they cannotbe expected to gait in estimated that the Portsmouth club will drop nearly £50 over their two list fixtures with First League team* ; and beyond thatihey have not added apenny to the finances in a fortnight. They were indeed bad speculations. The Preston players spent Baturday-Monday in Portsmouth, and they enjoyed the trip immensely. In the morning they were granted the rare privilege of inspecting the sea forts at Spithead.Portsmouth and Queen's Park Rangers met for the seventh time on Wednesday since the former club was established, and playing on their own ground, theRangers were just able to snatch their first victory by 3—2. No fewer than live of tiie previous games had been won byPortsmouth. After an absence extending over nine weeks, Joyce reappeared in the Portsmouth team on Saturday, and, strange to say, lie was tried at inside right, this making Marshall’s fifth partner since September 1.Portsmouth’s Christmas programme will be a heavy one. On Christmas morning they are due at Tottenham, and the following afternoon entertain Kettering at Fratton Park, winding up on Saturday witli a visit to Millwall.Bristol City. The draw for the intermediate round ofthe F.A. Cup has given very little satisfaction. It was bad enough to have to go away, and matters were made worse by having to go to Reading.Jt is the ambition of the City to do I well in this competition. The team are very keen about going further than theclub has ever gone before.Swindon surprised everybody by the form they showed last Saturday. It was not good enough to win, but it was a long way in front of what was exhibited theprevious week.Menham was again at his best. Ritchie was his most able assistant, though the others were much more reliable thanusual.Tiie feature of the play of the City was the dash anu keenness displayed all rouud.Bristol Rovers. After one or two of their recent performances, the Rovers were none too confident about their visit to Kensal Rise. Luck lias not been with them of late, and it deserted them on Saturday. It was not pleasant to find that Queen’s Park Rangers got their first goal from a penalty kick. The Rovers have given too many of those away this season. The player concerned and some of his colleagues did not like the decision of the referee. Tiiev showed the effects of it by their subsequent play, and that wasnot encouraging.Like so many other Southern Leagueclub* the Rovers are by no means so formidable away from their own ground. Tory have not lost a point there this s* a:-on.The F.A. Cup lias not been very profitable to the Rovers so far. Poor gates attended their ties with Weymouth and Swindon, and they cannot hope for a much better return at Luton.Q ucen’s Park Rangers.ij Bristol Rovers made the Rangers travel all (he way for their victory. It was a curiously-exciting game, beinghardly fought and interesting to the last. The Rovers’ custodian, Gray, again exhibited perverseness when Hitch opened the scoring from a penalty.Ronaldson, though he strained hisgroin, caused his wing men to showenormous improvement upon their Lutonform. The Rangers’debut, versus Portsmouth, in the Western League, before their own supporters, provided excellent sport.Frank Bedingfield, the erstwhileRanger, strove hard to score against his former club-mates, but this privilege was de lied him.Ample, amends were made for therecent thrashing at the seaport town, the final score reading 3-2.A great little back is Newlands, and liis meritorious play is highly appreciated.Leather, who “minds tne ghop” forthe second string, scored from a penalty against Chesham Generals. The Rangers’ Christmas programme is not an extensive one.M lllwall appear on Christmas morning at tiie Rise in a Western League match.Brighton and Hove will be visited by the Southern Leaguers ©n Boxing Day, and in their absence a strong team willentertain West Hampstead.Reading.New Brompton thoroughly sustained their reputation for dashing play on Saturday, and with the Reading defence somewhat off colour it weuld not have been surprising had they captured a point at Reading's expense.Frettingham was the moving spirit in the New Brompton attack, but his goal, though cleverly worked for, savoured strongly of offside.Reading twice unsuccessfully appealed for penalties on Saturday. The supporters of Reading are delighted with the F.A. Cup draw. Two years ago Bristol City gave Reading their quietus in the competition at Bristol by 3 goals to 2, but with the venue at Reading, they have an excellent opportunity of turning the tables on their old rivals.Despite statements to the contrary, the shooting competition arranged by the Reading Club will take place, but not in the Town Hall, which has been refused by the authorities.Arnett, ef Culbam College, and Herbert Smith, of Witney, will assist Reading in their Christmas mate he*.
