EasterlingBUCKHANNON—Pine Grove Valley's dream of a first-ever state basketball championship came to a crashing end here Saturday and Fort Gay made off with the Class A title.Fort Gay won by 52-46 in the girls statehigh school tournament.♦ * *PINE GROVE VALLEY’S Toni King, perhaps the best player in the state, took a hard fall in the fourth quarter and was taken to a hospital on a stretcher.When Pine Grove Valley had King, it enjoyed a 44-41 lead with 5:19 remaining. That's when it happened. King went high for a rebound and tumbled to the floor, screaming in pain from a back injury.The turn of events shook the entire Pine Grove- team as a doctor treated King for some 15 minutes on the floor before it was decided to take her to a hospital. The extent oi the injury was not immediately known.When piav resumed, Fort Gay moved out front with a string of seven straight points. Pine Grove Valley managed only five points after the untimely departure of its star, who pumped in 30 points Friday night in a 65-48 semifinai victory over 'Talcotl.Kim Doe led Fort Gay’s drive to its 22nd win, and the championship with 26 points on top of the 22 she contributed Friday when her team eliminated Masontown Valley, 41-40.Sherry Damron and Jeanette Ratcliffe fired in 16 and 10 points for Fort Gay to join Doe as Class A all-tournament players.King, who had 19 points and 13 rebounds before her crashing exit, also was named to the all-tournament team, along with teammate Susan McNeely.
