SIX POINTS — Ottumwa High sophomore Rick Boyd made the best of his varsity wrestling debut, rolling Burlington’s Shawn Soule to his shoulders in a 112-pound bout for the only OHSpin in a 26-25 win Referee Bill Rex. (Courier photos by Terrv Hersom)By TERRY HERSOM Assistant sports editorThe book on Rick Rozen-boom, Ottumwa High wrestler, gets better with every page. The 155-pounder known as “Boomer” added a pound of salt to his reputation Thursday night by beating previously undefeated Bob Carter. And the OHS mat team needed it to salvage a 26-25 win in the OHS Gym over Burlington.“I’m not just a one-move wrestler anymore,” Rozen-boom announced in the lockerroom after slipping a 5-4 verdict on top of Carter’s prior record of 1(M).When the Boomer WAS a one-move performer last year as a sophomore, he’d lost an 8-6 verdict to Carter as Burlington beat OHS for the first time in eight years. 33-23.But Rozenboom has added to the repertoire which once consisted mainly of a strong headlock with which he muscled his way to a 13-11-1 sophomore record on the Bulldog varsity. And it wasn’t his improvement alone that made the difference Thursday night as OHS evened its record at 2-2. The Bulldogs won seven of the 12 bouts and six of the OHS winners were underclassmen.Super-sub Smith Pins boost Davis grapplers roll/,111 (' / 11- I 111 Carrdinal to (n Albia mat, 39-16j * XXX 9 X J-M? Boyd’s first-period pin in the 112-pound bout was the only fall for OHS and looked as significant as anything esle in the final analysis. The one-point OHS victory leaned heavily on the performance of Rick Tiegs, too. Tiegs, the only senior to win among four in the lineup, turned a major decision (4 team points) into a superior verdict (5 points for winning by 12 or more) with a reversal and near fall in the final eight seconds of a 15-2 win at 119 pounds. The other Bulldog victories, of course, were equally vital. OHS won the first six matches. Junior Jeff Schrantz notched his first win at 98, sophomore Jeff Pfaff hiked his team-leading record to 5-1 with a win at 105 and junior Mike OTear scored his first win at 126 in addition to the victories by Boyd, Tiegs and Dunning.Even with the opening six-bout string, the first in two seasons for OHS in dual competition, the Bulldogs were not out of the woods. Burlington’s Mark Feigum beat Chris Carr, who weighed in at his certified 132 spot, in the 138-pound bout and Gray hound 145-pounder Tom Pilger pinned Bob Jay with 38 seconds left after Jay had earlier led 4-0.Despite a 23-9 lead, OHS was desperately in need of a win. And it was Rozenboom, the youngster who’d not previously wrestled in his certified 155-pound slot, who provided it.With a minute gone in the first period, Rozenboom scoredBulldog JVs tumble 44-20a takedown. Carter reversed him 23 seconds later, but Rozenboom escaped just before the buzzer sounded. He reversed Carter with 25 seconds left in the second period and Carter reversed him with 50 seconds left in the match to round out the scoring.“You have to give Boomer credit, particularly since it was his idea to wrestle Carter,” said OHS coach I^arry Kilmer. “The match was certainly the highlight of the meet.” Rozenboom’s win gave OHS a 26-9 lead which Burlington could have turned into a 27-26 win with pins in all of the final three bouts. And the Grayhounds came mighty close to getting the iob done.It was all but over, however, when Kurt Ross failed to pin Dan Trafton in the 167-pound bout. Ross put Trafton, a 155-pounder actually, on his back in the closing seconds, but Trafton fought him off and a 13-2 Grayhound win was insufficient to the cause.Jeff Boyer pinned Rick Werner at 185 and Del Partington stopped Jeff Bates with 1:10 remaining, leading by a scant 3-2, at heavyweight as Burlington tightened up the final score.“We wrestled real well, but not quite as aggressively as we usually.do,” said Kilmer. “We were more cautious and careful and this time it paid off. We wrestled with a little maturity tonight.”The Bulldogs can lavish their .500 dual meet record for 30 days since their next dual is not until Jan. 17, when they visit Fairfield, which currently rides a 25-meet winning streak that includes a pair of one-point wins over OHS.In the interim, Kilmer’s crew has three tournament dates, the first of them Saturday inthe Cedar Rapids Washington Invitational, then the Ottumwa Invitational Jan. 3 and the Indianola Quad Jan. 10. Kilmer said Thursday’s lineup will remain the same Saturday except for a switch in positions between Carr and Dunning.OTTUMWA 26, BURLINGTON 2598 Jeff Schrantz (O) dec.
