Hunter Scores-27, Krichbaum, 17By DICK BRANTIGAMSalem’s Quakers served notice Friday night that they once again are one of the Class AA cage powers in the state as they laid low a good Columbiana team by a score of 81-56.Dave Hunter, did little to harm his reputation of being one of the top guards in Ohio. The 5-10 senior ripped the nets for 27 points to lead both teams in the scoring department.Hunter and his running mate at guard, Dan Krichbaum, have lost none of their skill in harassing opponents on defense. The talented pair each accounted for four steals besides forcing many errant Clipper passes. Krichbaum also found time to drop in 17 points. •It was already pretty well known what the guards could do. They both were reggulars last year on the state runner-up squad. However. it was the performances of the tall men who must have given Coach John Cabas the most satisfaction last night.Junior Don Davidson, 6-4, played his heart out against his former mates, pulling down 16 rebounds and scoring 14 points. Jim Solmen, 6-1, was no shooting sensation but he grabbed off 13 important rebounds. Eric Theiss, 6-5, is still no Lou Slaby in scoring or rebounding. but his improvement since last year makes him a valuable asset to the team.Davidson, Solmen or Theiss cleared the boards. After scoring eight goals in the first quarter, Columbiana cooled off in their shooting and wound up with 11 baskets in 30 tries in the first half.Salem outscored their opponent 16-9 in the third period before both quintets picked up the tempo in the final quarter. With Hunter ramming through 12 points for Salem and Harrold 8 for Columbiana, the Quakers racked up 31 points and the Clippers 20 in the fourth period.THE FINAL SCORE was 81-56 but the Clippers weren’t that bad; Salem was that good after the first quarter. The overflow crowd which packed the local high school gym sat stunned as the small but agressive Clippers of Coach Rich Berryman vaulted into a 17-10 first quarter lead.Columbiana came into the contest with two straight victories to their credit while Salem was still intested in regular season combat. The Quakers took one quarter to recover from the baptism and then settled down to work.Davidson became the first Salem player to score this season as he sank a foul shot to get the Quakers off to a 1-0 lead in the first minute of play. Then, with Gary Perkins, Rich Harrold and Don Culp doing all the scoring, the Clipoers outplayed Salem the remained of the quarter.Harrold, who came into the contest wi’h an 18.5 point average for two games, booked every bit that good against the Quakers. He wound up with 20 ponts, tops for the Clippers. Culp chipped in with 10 markers and Perkins 9.As an indication of the height disadvantage Columbiana was up against last night. Harrold. their tallest starter, is listed as an even 6 feet.SALEM’S FIRST substitute came with 1:26 remaining in the first period when Ed Yates came in for Theiss at center. Theiss had picked up two quick fouls in the period. He was charged with two more during second half play.Culp was the only man to foul out of the game. He left with 1:45 left in the fray.Cabas substituted heavily late in the contest as 10’men broke into the scoring column. The Quakers played without the services of Jim Lehwald, a senior whom Cabas had hoped to start at forward. Lehwald injured his leg in a preview game againsj Massillon here last month and the injury has been slow in responding to treatment. He was on the bench but did not dress for the game, Solmen, who started in Leh-wald’s place, was a late arrival last night at the high school gym. The relaxed senior had to be aroused from sleep at his home and didn’t arrive at the gym until a few minutes before game time.COLUMBIANA WAS hot from the foul line last night canning 20of 26 shots. Salem hit on 15 of 22 from the foul line. From the field the Quakers fired in 33 of 73 shots for a dazzling 45 per cent.Coach Cabas was burned up last night before the game even started. He wanted more warm up time before the varsity tilt. Referees for the varsity game were Frank Susor and Andrew Lindsay, both of Youngstown. A1 Catlos and Tom Nedelka worked the Reserve game. The overflow crowd and the relocation of the student cheering section left the cheerleaders no place to sit or stand. They wound up sitting on the floor Salem will play its second home game of the season Tues day against East Palestine, winner of two contests and loser of one.
