-jWalcott Whips Perns. .Buffalo, N. Y.. Dec. 1$.-—Rube Ferns, the welterweight champion, went down to defeat at the bands of Joe Walcott in five rounds at Fort Erie tonight. Walcott battered down Ferns with ter- j rific body blows and right and left swings to the bead. To save Ferns from being completely knocked out the ref-i eree stopped the bout and awarded the decision to Walcott In the fifth round j Walcott sent Ferns to the boards on j [ two occasions, and Rube twice took the count. When he arose the second time ne was in a weakened condition. The fight while it lasted was fast and fierce.| The preliminary bout between Hiram j Goldstein of Buffalo and Mike Ward of Canada developed intg a slugging match, and the men were stopped by the police. The bout was declared a draw.After the fight Walcott challenged any man in the world, Tommy Ryan preferred. j
