Shannock Valley and Ford City stood eye-to-eye on the Spartan basketball court When the fourth quarter started. Ford City blinked.Shannock pulled out an early, but important, section 14AA-A contest, 47-38. with a nine-point scoring barrage in the first three minutes of the final period Shannock then salted away ihe win at the free throw lineThe Spartans are now 2-1 in the section —- losing only to AA Mars — and are 3-1 overall Ford City fell to 1-2 in the section and 1-4 overall.Ford City had ample opportunity to take control of the game in the first half but failed to convert a wide variety of inside shots They also had problems at the free throw line, converting just six of 16 (38 percent) onthe night.We missed a lot of layups tonight.” said Ford City coach Tom Dinga “We thought we had some height advantage but we didn't use it to our advantage We didn’t play a poor first half but we needed to get the lead to get into our half-court offense“It's frustrating because we did what we wanted to. but failed to convert (the inside opportunities). That probably frustrated everyone and we started to press in the fourth quarter We did some things well, played good defense, but the loss makes everything look bad We can t let this get us down.”Ford City had taken an 11-8 lead late in the first period but the Spartans got hot and ran off six unanswered points to move ahead 14-11 at the end of the period Scott Peace, who finished witn 11 of Shan-nock s 44 rebounds, crashed the offensive boards for a three-point play to give the Spartans the lead going into the second quarterBut Jerry Bell, who along with Rhett Hellgren scored eight points to lead Ford City, canned two noops togive the Sabers a 15-14 edge Bruce aillie then converted both ends of a one-and-one to give Ford City another
