Fields Middle School isstill working,Craven Community College kept the numbers changing fast for 30 minutes, then survived a3-point barage from Lenoir Community College in a 95-89 victory Wednesday in New Bern.“It was the best game we’ve played all year,’’ said Craven coach Si Seymour. “For 30 minutes we played about as well as we could play.”Johnny Gatlin got the Panthers (4-3) going early, scoring 18 of his 26 points in the first half Craven opened up a 51-38 lead athalftime.Former Jones Senior standout Chris Brown provided the scoring punch in the second half for Craven, pouring in 23 of his game-high 31 points as the Panthers took a seemingly insurmountable77-54 lead with 9:54 to play.“Gatlin got most of his points working hard on the inside in the first half,” Seymour said. “He was really battling for offensiverebounds.“Then Chris Brown got hot. Hewas unconscious in the second half, just shooting the ball withmen right on him and making it. It was really pretty to watch.”Lenoir hit five 3-pointers in the closing minutes, including three by Pat Monisey and two by Al Jones, to close the gap but time ran out before more damage could be done.Monisey ended the game with 21 points for Lenoir, while Jones added 17.“It was really a total team effort,” Seymour said. “We played 11 guys and they all played well. To play 11 guys and win against a Division I community college is a credit to our kids.”Seymour said that while Brown was providing the fireworks from the perimeter, the Panthers were establishing a good inside game.“Jermaine Chapman and Arlandis Green really controlled the boards,” he said. “In the second half we played well inside, and Marcus Wilson did a good jobrunning the team from the point guard spot.”Green finished with 12 points while Chapman, who played at West Craven High School, recorded a game-high 12 rebounds for the Panthers.“As young and inexperienced as we are, we’re tickled to death to be4-3 at Christmas,” Seymour said.Craven is idle over the holiday break and resumes play against Wayne Community College at 7 p.m. on Jan. 7 at Grover C. FieldsIn New Bern.
