Coach Stan Sheriffmade certain Korver’s vital contribution didn’t go unrewarded when it came time to pass out the medals and gold footballs at a post-game dinner celebration.Korver, 220-pound junior from Orange City, plays a normally inconspicuous position in the attacking force that opens the holes for Little All-America fullback Randy Schultz to do the big damage, but there is more to his job than snapping the ball,Doug faced a large problem in the Midwest college-division championship battle, trying to check the hard charging of burly Anthony Guillory,Lamar’s 227-pound middle guard, drafted by both the Los Angeles Rams and Houston Oilers,Guillory delights in rocking opposing centers back on the seat of their pants by sheer brute force, and Sheriff mentioned several timesbeforehandthat the outcome could hinge on the winner of the Korver-Guillory duel. *Well, Korver came out of it with untarnished pants. He metthe challenge so skillfully that the official statistics showed Guillory with just one tackle.The Lamar star had averaged •15 per game during the season.Los Angeles and Houston scouts were at the game and both told me afterward that they had come to watch the wrong player,” Sheriff said.
