He ended up in Saudi Arabia with the Army, but now he’s back in familiar territory and lighting up the scoreboard for the Panthers.Playing for Craven has reunited Brown with another player who remembers that night back in high school. Dusty Cabe was the unfor-tunate Southwest Onilowdefender assigned to guard the sizzling Brown.•*Man, was he hot,” said Cabe, a reserve for the 3-3 Panthers. “Coach told me to put a hand in his face. I picked his nose for him while he was jumping and he still was making it.Now he plays for us, so I’m glad when he has hot nights.”HBrown has already had a few in Craven’s young season. He’s averaging over 26 points over six games, putting him in the top ten nationally among Division II junior colleges.He’s still deadly accurate from behind the 3-point stripe, having connected on i 9 of 41 attempts, or 46 percent.“What’i amazing is that he hits them in the face of big people,” said Craven coach Si Seymour. ‘‘But he’s not only a great shooter, he’s a great scorer. If you come out too far to get him, hecan go byIt was that kind of ability that attracted Minnesota’s attention when Brown was a prep senior.When they were recruiting me,I hadn’t taken the SAT yet,”Brown said. “Then 1 hurt my foot and they didn’t want to take a chance on me. It hurt my feelingsa little bit.**Brown enlisted in the Army and was sent to Saudi Arabia during the Gulf War, an experience that made him “grow up real fast.**It was there in the desert that he decided to go back to school.“1 was on guard duty at about three in the morning and 1 started thinking about what 1 wanted to do with my life,** he said, ll knew it wasn’t the military.’*Seymour was understandably delighted to hear from a player whom he had recruited in high school and signed him immediately.The move paid instantSee BROWN /B3
