By RED BURNHAMKNICK KNACKS AND NOTES...What just a short time ago seemed like the end of women’s pro bowling has suddenly turned into a great merger...The PWBA and LPBA recently ironed out their problems and last week performed great in Detroit in the AMF Grand Prix of Bowling...They not only bowled great, with Edie Joe Neal averaging 219 for her 38 games, but looked great in their mini-skirts...It appears their new director, Roger Blaemire, has things in high gear in the future...“The PWBA was broke and the LPBA was in bad shape,” said Vesma Grinfelds. “We re about five years behind golf, but I think we’re moving on the right track now...” she added with a hopeful sound to her voice.Pete Couture and Bill Spigner, taking a break from the tour which will begin again in January, will meet in an exhibition match Saturday at Hamden Lanes...The pair is competing for the benefit of the Retarded Children of North Haven...-merchants have been solicited and will be paying $1 per strike during the three-game match...Presently each strike is worth about $40 which could raise a fine total of cash for the retarded...Should each bowler connect for 20 strikes over the three games, that would mean $1,600 for the fund...Another pro is also donating his time as Larry Lichstein will do the commentary as the match is being taped to be telecast at a later date...Action begins at 1 p.m.It sure looks like Mark Roth and Betty Morris are sho-ms for Bowler of the Year honors this year...but next year a little 20-year old could take over for the women...Donna Adamek certainly impressed a lot of people with her bowling in the Grand Prix...She has to be one of the great stars of the future...All she lacks is a little seasoning...She already has two pro titles to her credit and there will be a lot more...When Couture and Spigner finished in the top lOon the PBA money list it marked the first time two Connecticut bowlers have ever accomplished this feat...Pete in picking up, $46,201 (6th) averaged $1,540 per outing while Spigner averaged $1,213 for 34 events in winning $41,251 (10th)...Pete bowled in 30 events...AMF sure picked the right time to introduce their new ball...the KE-21 Impact came out the day their Grand Prix began...It just so happened that Jay Robinson, an AMF staff member, used it throughout the tourney and won...AMF staff member wins AMF tournament with new AMF ball...That’s one the promo department can work with...NEBA is slated for Westgate Lanes in Brockton Mass. this weekend...Squad times, 7 p.m. Saturday and 10 a.m. and 12:30 Sunday...Simsbury and Meadow Lanes are holding roll-offs for new TV show that is being shown on Channel 22 Sunday mornings at 11...There is nothing like keeping it in the family...Nancy Garofalo scored her first NEWBA victory by defeating Phyliss Williams, 400-377...Her sister, Sue Crasili, has won four NEWBA’s giving Nancy some work to do to catch up...Mary Strong was the only area bowler to cash, finishing 13th... Young Gail Gajewski, who bowled with the South Windsor Ten Pin Bowl Junior League last year, is now rolling with Southern Conn. State College and still tossing strikes...The East Hartford freshman had a 1569, eight-game set in the New England Qualifying of the EIBC doubles in Wilbraham recently to that title...She had 707 for her first four games then came storming back with 862 for the next four that included games of 244 and 238...Her team will be among those from across the nation that will be competing for the National Collegiate Bowling Championships...A dozen men’s and a dozen women’s teams will advance to the finals to be held in Milwaukee in April...Chris Leggio’s 632 was high in the Russo Ladies Classic at Bloomfield with Mary Strong having a 615 and Alice Lumpkin a 603...Sonya Macierowski’s 612 was high in the Russo Mixed Doubles for the women. A1 Sarget had a 630 for the men...Les Howe set the scoring pace in the Steak Club Classic at Bradley, popping a 701...Others connecting big were Marty Fichman, 668; Gary Morgan, 647; Glenn Zaugg, 643; Ted Kone, 667; and Guy Simpson, 670...Kone’s 217 average is still high in the league. Morgan is next with 213 and Mike Wodka has 212...Entry blanks are out for the upcoming men’s and women’s city tournaments...Better get going and don’t be left out...Men will bowl at Simsbury, beginning in late January.
