Western Matmen Take PairCASA GRANDE (Special) — The Arizona Western College grapplers fought to a eome-from-behind victory against Con 1 ml Arizona Community College last night in Casa Grande.“It was a nice victory.” said Coach Glenn Mayle. “But we lost something 1lt;m.”Marin Bailev, A.W.C. 177-pounder, was left behind in the Casa Grande hospital with a serious shoulder injury and may be lost for the season.The injury to Bailey could not have occurred at a less opportune time for Arizona Western.Holding onto a slim 15-14 lead, the forfeit put thrm in the hole at 20-15.But 190-pound Ira Murphy pinned Central’s Dan Knudle at 4:18 of the second quarter to give Western a one-point edge going inlo I lie liual match.It didn’t take Mike Howe long to put the match away and record Western's third victory in four decisions. He polished off Central's Frank Ivy in 38-seconds of the firstperiod in the heavyweight bou t.The dual meet started easily for the Matadors, as Reed Greeuwell took a 11-2 decision over Central’s Norman Aliras in llie 118 division.Jim May added four team poinls for the Matadors by crushing Bob Rougemont 21-9, and Mark Bert eh followed with a 0-4 decision over Central's Leo Davison.But with a 10-0 lead, things quickly feel apart Jeff Mercer’s3-3 tie with Rubin Teruuza set the stage for events to come. Matador Ben Rowe was pinned by Janies Haynes in the 150 class, and Mike Gvne got morn of the. same from Central’s Robert Mitchell at 158.Western’s Steve Campos de-ciskmed Dan Barrera 6-1 in the 167 division to setup the match between Martin Bailey and Lewis Green.“ft was a tough mulch that could have gone either way, noted Coach Mayle. ‘They (the Matadors) have earned a well-deserved rest.”The Westerners will have a two-week lay-off before resuming practice on December 31 in preparation for the five-way meet-at Mesa, Colorado on January 4.In Friday's home match against Pima College, Arizona Western College relied on three pins and four forfeits enroute to an easy 48-3 win.Picking up forfeit victories for the Matadors were 118-pound Reed Greeuwell, 126-pound Jim May, 134*ponnd Mark Rertsoh and 167-pound Steve Campos.Getting pins for AWC were 142-pound Jeff Mercer, who stopped Pima’s Kelly Chr-slipher iri the Hurd period, Mike Grue, who got to Leo Trujillo in the 158-pound affair, and Ira Murphy, who pinned Pima’s A1 Trujillo in the second periud of the 190-pound fray.Olher AWC wins came as Ben Rowe defeated John Sain?4-3 and Mike Howe decisioned Pat Lopez 12-3.Westner’s only loss came in the 177-pound bout as Pima’s Richard Rosier edged AWC’s Marin Bailey 8-7 on ruling time.
